Job Summary

A Parks and Recreation Lifeguard Instructor is responsible for teaching lifeguarding skills and water safety to potential lifeguards, ensuring they meet the required standards to safely supervise swimming areas within a park or recreation facility, often by leading training courses and maintaining a high level of aquatic safety awareness among participants, while adhering to all relevant regulations and facility policies. Under general supervision of the Parks Director, Superintendent or Recreation and/or Activities Coordinator, the Lifeguard Instructor will teach American Red Cross Lifeguard courses at Tulsa County Parks Facilities.

Job Description

All candidates conditionally offered transfer, promotion or initial hiring into a DOT/safety-sensitive position shall submit to testing for drugs and alcohol and test negative before performing any job functions that are safety-sensitive or require a CDL. External job applicants with a confirmed positive drug or alcohol test result shall be denied employment and shall be required to wait one year before applying for another position within Tulsa County.

Essential Job Functions

  • Lead American Red Cross Lifeguard and American Red Cross Lifeguard Recertification courses.
  • Responsible for developing lesson plans and managing timelines for material.
  • Lead six to ten students per class.
  • Monitor activities, provide instructions and prevent accidents in the aquatic’s facility.
  • Maintain pool and equipment cleanliness and safety.
  • Provide customer service.
  • Must possess a good working relationship with American Red Cross.
  • Record and organize accurate records concerning attendance, accident/incident/injury reports, and participant/student information.
  • Maintain security of American Red Cross testing materials and participant's completed tests.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, orderly facility and class.
  • Assist with planning, attend and participate in all mandatory staff meetings and trainings.
  • Promote aquatic programs and center memberships.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor, including abiding to uniform requirements.
  • Complete additional duties assigned by supervisors.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge in department customer service standard; practices, procedures, and techniques of swimmers from accidents situations; and of lifesaving equipment.

Skill in communications, both verbally and in writing; swimming; pool safety practices, procedures, rules, and regulations; administering first aid and CPR; and presenting in a group setting.

Ability to work with people of different abilities and fitness level; flexible and able to adapt to different learning styles; receive constructive criticism; react calmy and effectively in emergency situations; able to work weekends; and maintain personal physical endurance and agility necessary to perform the job functions.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

Education and/or Experience

High school diploma or GED; some college preferred; and previous experience in lifeguarding at a public swimming pool, assistant pool manager and prior teaching of American Red Cross Lifeguard courses preferred.  Must be at least 19 years old.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups and customers or employees or organizations.                                                    

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent to draw logical conclusions and interpret bar graphs.                                                       

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding, to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.                   

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Certified in American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid and CPR/AED for the Lifeguard

Certified in American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid and CPR/AED for the Lifeguard Instructor.
