Job Summary: The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) GS-07 performs more complex nursing assignments within their setting. The LPN possesses comprehensive practical nursing knowledge and skills in specialized procedures and practices. The LPN work is of considerable difficulty and responsibility is performed under general supervision.

The LPN work is of considerable difficulty and responsibility is performed under general supervision. Individuals in these positions are to a considerable extent, expected to exercise independent technical judgments and to possess and apply a comprehensive working knowledge of the principles, art, and science of practical nursing. Employees at this grade level demonstrate broader knowledge skill with respect to these responsibilities than employees at lower grades. The LPN is responsible for goals and interventions that promote veterans in attaining maximum functional potential. This is accomplished through but not limited to modalities such as ambulation, bowel and bladder training, dressing, grooming, bathing, oral hygiene, range of motion exercises and fall prevention modalities.The incumbent has basic knowledge and skills necessary for a concentrated effort and is somewhat independent in carrying out standardized procedures of limited complexity. The incumbent is responsible to deliver fundamental, knowledge-based care to assigned patients while developing technical competencies. This position may entail other duties as assigned and travel duties as assigned to the community level clinics. Duties include but are not limited to the following: a. Participates in the interdisciplinary team in the development, implementation, and evaluation of the patient's treatment plan. b. Interacts with patients in groups in accordance with the patient's treatment plan. c. Observes, identifies, and responds to the patients' needs for nursing, medication, and equipment assisted care and recognizes deviations from normal. d. Uses practical knowledge of human behavior, motivations, and reactions to situations in working effectively with patients, family, and other staff members. Qualifications: Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d). Education or Training: Must be a graduate of a practical or vocational nursing program approved by the appropriate State accrediting agency and/or the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing at the time the program was completed by the applicant, or have you completed Health care education in the military service or training in the military service. Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determination: GS-7 Completion of at least one year of additional qualifying experience at the GS-6 level or equivalent as an LPN or LVN, fully meeting all performance requirements for the GS-7 position. Preferred Experience: 2 yrs in women's health and Obstetrics & Gynecology References: VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G13 The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-07. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is GS-07. Physical Requirements: This position may include a level of physicality normally associated with duties performed by nurses such as walking, bending, stooping, and some lifting. There may also be extended periods of sitting or standing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. Utilization of safe patient handling and mobility protocols using mechanical lifts that are provided.
