Job Description

General Duties:

Perform the maintenance, installation, repair and or removal of all types of water piping systems, including plumbing fixtures as well as appurtenances in accordance with all of the recognized plumbing codes and regulations in the state of Massachusetts. Perform similar operational needs in both Residential and Academic areas including but not withstanding dorm rooms, office spaces, laboratory spaces, and associated mechanical rooms and spaces. Respond to and troubleshoot and repair Plumbing calls across the 1.4 M sq ft campus. Operate and monitor Johnson Controls and Schneider ENE EcoStructure control systems. Complete PM work orders as assigned and enter daily time as required. Be available ON CALL through a rotational based system.

Supervision:

Directly responsible to the Assistant Director of Engineering and Building Systems and to the MEP manager.

Specific Duties

  • Shall maintain and or repair water piping, vent piping, soil waste, plumbing systems for labs, mechanical rooms, kitchens, toilet and bathrooms, acid neutralization, RO systems, and safety eye wash and deluge shower piping systems.

  • Shall maintain and/or repair underground sub soil drainage, sewer, acid waste piping, and water main distribution systems.

  • Shall repair and or replace damaged plumbing fixtures including sinks, toilets urinals, showers and bathtubs.

  • Shall connect same to outlet/inlet pipes by fitting gaskets, couplings, traps, and valves.

  • Shall inspect connections and or system parts on any related plumbing system including domestic hot water boilers and associated piping.

  • When needed assist with maintaining hot water heating boilers as well as associated piping.

  • Shall replace defective piping where necessary due to leaks and corrosion.

  • Shall maintain, operate, troubleshoot, and repair water, soil, and drain piping.

  • Shall have knowledge of BAS Building Automation Systems including both Johson Controls and Schneider ENE EcoStructure.

  • Shall formulate quantity estimates of materials and initiate telephone contact with vendors/supplies for pricing when instructed to by management.

  • Will assist associate workers during emergencies, such as inclement weather, mechanical failures, clean-ups or anything else deemed necessary.

  • Shall be able to adjust to tasks that may arise due to emergency situations.

  • Complete preventative and general maintenance work orders in a timely manner.

  • Assist other shops where necessary to perform duties above and beyond job scope. This may include, but is not limited to, assisting set-up/breakdown of occasional campus wide events like commencement, move-in/ move-out, etc. Also assist HVAC Department when needed.

  • Help with removal of snow when required.

Qualifications:

  • Shall have completed High School and or a graduate of a Vocational School, along with (5) years of experience as a Massachusetts Certified Licensed Plumber in the plumbing field.

  • Must be able to read, write and comprehend the English language as well as possess the ability to compute addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of whole numbers, decimals, and common fractions.

  • Must have a valid Massachusetts Drivers License to operate a motor vehicle.

  • Must be mature, adaptable, and can work pleasantly and tactfully with his or her fellow employees, faculty, students and staff in a professional and appropriate manner.

  • Develop new and creative ways of keeping the interior and exterior systems well maintained.

  • Maintain the mindset that we are a service organization and strive to improve on service both as an individual and as a part of a department. Proving to the customer that you are working towards their best interests.

Position Details: 

This position is full-time Tuesday through Saturday 6:00 am to 2:30 pm.

Wentworth Institute of Technology and the Service Employees International Union, Local 32BJ, District 615 (the “Union”) have a collective bargaining agreement covering Facilities employees.

The hourly rate for this position in the current year is $46.71.
