The Legal Support Specialist plays a vital role in supporting attorneys within the JD/JS division, serving as a central point of contact for clients, courts, and external partners. This position blends client interaction with detailed administrative and legal responsibilities, including drafting documents, managing calendars, and coordinating case activities. The Office of the Public Advocate seeks professionals, both attorneys, and legal staff members, to join our legal defense team!
We're committed to the mission of protecting the fundamental rights of our clients. We're dedicated to providing effective legal representation to all indigent persons, those individuals who are not able to afford the services of private lawyers, when appointed by the Maricopa County Superior Court. Our clients include juveniles charged with criminal offenses, parents, and children in dependency and severance matters (loss of parental rights), and people facing court-ordered mental health evaluation and treatment.
This position is open to current Maricopa County employees. Judicial Branch (i.e., Adult and Juvenile Probation and Superior Court) employees will not be considered as qualified for this opportunity.

We Require
Two years of experience in a legal setting with knowledge of legal preparations and legal proceedings
High school diploma or GED
A combination of post-secondary education and/or job-related experience may substitute for the minimum qualifications on a year-for-year basis
We Also Value
Experience in conducting client interviews
Previous work in a criminal defense office
Experience in Juvenile Severance/Dependency
Job Contributions
Serve as liaison between attorney, clients and external agencies
Meet with clients and conduct cursory interviews on case status
Accept phone calls from clients on behalf of attorneys; immediately responding to time sensitive matters, forwarding messages, and entering notes of conversations in a shared database
Draft letters, reports to the court, and other memorandum for attorneys
Schedule appointments for attorneys with clients
Attend meetings with other system partners or service providers to assist client and attorney with case (i.e. CFT, TDMs, BID)
Additional duties and special projects as assigned
Working Conditions
Work is primarily performed in an office environment with bright lighting and requires prolonged periods in a stationary position, constant viewing of a computer monitor or screen, frequent computer use involving repetitive hand and wrist movements, and occasional exposure to outdoor heat and sunlight
Exposure to traumatic subject matter (crime scenes, accidents, etc.)
Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. Travel to and from court locations. Frequent interruptions and handling multiple tasks may be frequent occurrences. Alternative schedules are available after the training period based on business needs
