About the Position:

Flinders University is seeking a Lecturer in Education (Literacy) to contribute to high-quality teaching and research within Initial Teacher Education programs, with a focus on early literacy development and evidence-based practice, including systematic synthetic phonics and contemporary approaches to reading and writing instruction. The position supports the delivery and continuous improvement of literacy-focused curriculum aligned with South Australian and national priorities, including the Literacy Guarantee Unit (LGU), the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check, the Science of Reading, the Australian Curriculum, and the Early Years Learning Framework, while also contributing to the University’s research profile in literacy education through collaboration with schools, government, and professional networks.

In this position, you will:

  • Deliver and coordinate high-quality teaching in early literacy across undergraduate and postgraduate Initial Teacher Education programs, embedding evidence-based approaches to reading, writing, and assessment
  • Design and evaluate curriculum and learning experiences aligned with systematic synthetic phonics, phonological and phonemic awareness, comprehension, and writing development
  • Contribute to literacy research activity, including publications, research collaboration, and pursuit of external competitive funding
  • Supervise Honours and Higher Degree Research students, while contributing to partnerships with schools and the South Australian Department for Education to support literacy improvement and research translation

About You
You are an emerging academic with strong expertise in early literacy and a commitment to improving outcomes for children through evidence-based teaching and research. You are passionate about preparing future teachers to confidently implement high-impact literacy instruction in early childhood and primary settings.

You will demonstrate:

  • A PhD (or substantial progress towards completion) in Education, Literacy, Early Childhood, Linguistics, Educational Psychology, or a related field
  • Expertise in early literacy development, including phonemic awareness, systematic synthetic phonics, reading comprehension, and writing development
  • Experience teaching and/or mentoring in early childhood, primary, or higher education contexts, with the ability to translate literacy research into effective teaching practice
  • A developing research profile in literacy or related fields, with evidence of publications, research collaboration, or grant activity
  • Strong understanding of South Australian literacy priorities and frameworks, including the Literacy Guarantee Unit, Year 1 Phonics Screening Check, and evidence-based literacy approaches
