Job Description

The Division of Social Sciences at Prairie View A&M University invites applications for the non-tenure-track position of Lecturer I in the Political Science Program. The Division seeks candidates who are committed to excellence in teaching, research, and service to the University. The successful candidate will be primarily responsible for teaching American and Texas government courses, but may be assigned upper-division courses in their particular academic specialty if dictated by enrollment needs.

The salary is determined in accordance with the University’s compensation structure and will be commensurate with the candidates’ education and experience, within the assigned salary range for this position.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsibility for teaching Political Science courses.

  • Responsible for keeping records, posting grades (mid-term & final), submitting attendance reporting, and mentoring/advising students.

  • Attend University-sponsored activities, such as general student assembly, student recruitment fairs, graduation convocations, and and related events.

  • Serve on Division, College, and University committees.

  • Participate in Program-level duties such as academic assessment, student development, and curriculum enhancement.

  • Engage in professional development activities perform services beneficial to the Department, the College, and the University, as well as the community (locally, regionally, and globally) and the profession.

  • Perform other duties assigned by the POSC program coordinator and/or department head.

Required Education & Experience

  • MA in Political Science or related field with 18 graduate semester credit hours.

  • One year of full-time teaching experience in higher education.

  • Obtain PVAMU’s online teaching certification credentials and provide online and hybrid courses as required.

  • Experience participating in program-level duties such as academic assessment, student development, and curriculum enhancement.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.

  • Admissions functions of higher education.

  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Effectively teach survey courses in American and Texas Government and upper division courses in the candidate’s specialty.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Political Science or Public Administration.

  • More than one year of full-time teaching experience in higher education.

  • Experience teaching American Government and Texas Government survey courses.

  • Experience developing and teaching online courses.

  • Demonstrated ability to teach Legal Studies and Research Methods.
