What is the opportunity?
We are seeking an experienced risk-based PM/Trader to lead RBCICL Portfolio Management within Royal Bank of Canada Insurance Company Ltd (RBCICL), reporting to the CEO & Managing Director of RBCICL. The ideal candidate overseeing and optimizing the global fixed income investment portfolio, managing complex financial instruments while providing strategic counsel to senior leadership and collaborating with the RBC Insurance CIO Office. This leadership role is essential for driving effective portfolio strategy, maintaining strong risk governance, and ensuring alignment with regulatory and business objectives.
What will you do?
- Oversee management of global fixed income portfolios, including bonds, investment grade and HQLA credit instruments, interest rate swaps, FX positions, and collateral allocations
- Execute and oversee bond trading, interest rate swap strategies, investment grade and HQLA credit transactions, and FX hedging within approved risk parameters
- Monitor portfolio performance against benchmarks and risk limits; escalate issues and recommend corrective actions to senior management
- Provide regular reporting to CEO & Managing Director; reporting to RBCICL’s investment committee, maintain collaborative relationships with RBC Insurance CIO Office, RBCICL CFO, Appointed Actuary, and Market Risk Management
- Prepare and present portfolio augmentations, risk considerations, and performance updates to boards; communicate complex financial concepts to non-technical stakeholders
- Maintain proficiency in Bloomberg AIM/TOMS; ensure accurate portfolio analytics, valuation, and compliance reporting
- Manage, mentor, and develop one trade support staff member; ensure operational excellence and adherence to compliance standards
- Work with functional partners to ensure appropriate trade settlement, reconciliation, and operational risk management
What do you need to succeed?
Must-have
- Technical bachelor’s degree or Master's Degree in Finance, Economics, Mathematics, or related field
- 10+ years of experience managing fixed income portfolios in institutional and/or insurance contexts
- Proven expertise executing bond, interest rate swap, investment grade credit, HQLA credit, FX, and collateral transactions
- Advanced proficiency with Bloomberg AIM/TOMS platforms
- Demonstrated experience presenting portfolio strategies and risk considerations to boards or senior governance bodies
- Strong quantitative skills with ability to synthesize complex financial data and develop actionable insights
- Demonstrated stakeholder management and team leadership experience
- Knowledge of risk governance, regulatory frameworks, and compliance standards relevant to insurance portfolios
- Ability to work independently and make sound decisions in a fast-paced environment
Nice-to-have
- CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) credential
- FRM (Financial Risk Manager) credential
- Experience with IFRS 17 accounting standards for insurance portfolios
- Background in insurance portfolio management
- Proficiency with Murex, Apex, and/or Felix systems
- Experience managing trade support teams or operational staff
