Designs embedded systems firmware to support Abbott’s imaging and physiology products for the catheterization lab. Gets involved in the full development cycle, including requirements, design, and test. Works with a multidisciplinary team to integrate his/her work into a working system. Remains abreast of and consults on technical advancements. Identifies and routinely uses the most effective and cost-efficient best practices to execute processes; continually evaluates their effectiveness and appropriateness.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
- Participates in the creation and design of novel solutions for intravascular diagnostics instruments.
- Develops, tests, and releases firmware for imaging and physiology peripherals.
- Works with the hardware developers to optimize low-level interfaces.
- Captures firmware requirements from the overall product requirements.
- Creates hardware abstraction layers to drive peripheral functions.
- Participates in FMEA analysis and risk mitigation through firmware.
- Creates test procedures to verify design inputs.
- Develops testers to verify the functionality of peripheral subsystems in manufacturing and during the V&V process.
- Support all Company initiatives as identified by management and in support of Quality Management Systems (QMS), Environmental Management Systems (EMS), and other regulatory requirements.
- Complies with U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, other regulatory requirements, Company policies, operating procedures, processes, and task assignments. Maintains positive and cooperative communications and collaboration with all levels of employees, customers, contractors, and vendors.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Preferred Masters Degree in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Relevant embedded systems/firmware design using RTOS (Real-Time Operating Systems) and testing tools in a regulated environment.
- Ability to understand the technology and operation of medical instruments at the system level.
- Ability to interpret hardware designs and write abstraction layer drivers.
- Ability to write requirements and API documentation for embedded systems.
- Experience writing firmware with and without real-time operating systems (e.g. Real-Time Linux, Threadx, Free-Rtos, etc.).
- Experience with source control software
- Exposure to software FMEA and risk mitigation processes.
- Ability to write programs to test peripheral subsystems in manufacturing and V&V.
- Command of the C programming language and relevant IDE development systems.
- Command of test software programming languages
- Specific experience with ARM Cortex chips
- Specific experience with Nordic chips (ISM radios)
- Experience working in Agile development teams.
- Python and C++/C# programming languages.
- Previous experience with firmware for medical devices.
