As a Rocket Motor Assembly Commercial Programs Lead Design Engineer – Level 4 located in Magna, UT, you’ll be a linchpin in missions of paramount importance, defining the art of the possible from day one.      

The Rocket Motor Assembly Commercial Programs Lead Design Engineer is responsible for Integration Design Engineering on Commercial programs including GEM.  This includes Rocket Motor Assembly, Igniter, Raceway, Secondary Structures, Mass Properties, and  Thrust Vector Control Integration, where applicable.  This lead design engineer will have responsibility over the design for commercial rocket motors in development and production.  Responsibilities include drawing and model preparation, on-floor manufacturing support and MRB resolution, test support including authoring and reviewing plans and reports, and coordination with internal and external customers.  Scope may also include performing systems engineering tasks related to interface control, anomaly resolution, and performing peer reviews.

This position will work a 9/80 schedule, with every other Friday off.

Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Prepare 3D NX models, mechanical & assembly drawings, and specifications in accordance with company standards 

  • Support mechanical & integration design on Commercial rocket motors, including GEM 

  • Prepare test & instrumentation drawings, test plans, reports, and perform tolerance analysis 

  • Prepare trades studies and milestone review presentations

  • Prepare ICD, N2 Interaction matrices and Interface Summary Sheets

  • Prepare requirement specifications and provide verification reporting

  • Perform structural analysis on secondary structures bracket designs

  • Other duties as assigned

Basic Qualifications for Level 4:

  • Bachelor’s degree with 8 years of related engineering experience – OR – Master’s degree with 6 years of related engineering experience.   

  • Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government DoD Secret security clearance

  • Solid modeling experience in NX

  • Knowledge of GD&T, NG drawing standards, and experience preparing large, rocket motor assembly drawings

  • Experience with Finite Element Analysis

  • Broad understanding of commercial programs RMA designs, including GEM

  • MRB certified with experience evaluating and dispositioning discrepant RMA parts

  • Experience with manufacturing processes and on-floor support for commercial programs

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills including test report writing, MRB dispositions, and technical report writing

  • Demonstrated history of working well within a team and keeping customer satisfied

  • Strong problem-solving skills and a self-starter

  • Ability to collaborate and mentor team members

 Preferred Qualifications:     

  • Knowledge of the GEM 63/63XL rocket motor assembly designs

  • Systems engineering and integration experience

  • Mechanical Design and Assembly

Northrop Grumman Total Rewards 

Primary Level Salary Range: $122,800.00 - $184,200.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
