The Lead Specimen Processing Technician is responsible for accessioning and manually processing laboratory specimens with a high level of accuracy and efficiency. This role supports daily quality assurance activities, performs routine equipment maintenance, and helps ensure compliance with laboratory standards. 

The Lead Technician guides day-to-day workflow, assists with problem-solving, and maintains smooth operational processes in a fast-paced environment. Additional responsibilities include participating in meetings with supervisors and managers, contributing to process improvements and future development initiatives, and providing training and performance feedback to team members. This position functions as an extension of the leadership team, supporting both operational excellence and team growth. 

A caregiver in this position works days, from 6:00am—2:30pm. 

 

A caregiver who excels in this role will:   

  • Perform manual processing (centrifuge, aliquoting and routine maintenance) 

  • Perform problem solving functions and solving/issue resolution. 

  • Ensure compliance with basic regulations (temperature monitoring). 

  • Perform QA activities (pending log audit). 

  • Oversee shift operations and manage workflow issues. 

  • Adjust daily schedule as needed. 

  • Act as a technical resource, ensuring SOPs and policies are followed and FVPM of equipment is performed as required. 

  • Assist in troubleshooting. 

  • Inform management/supervision of issues and ensure appropriate communication between shifts. 

 

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • High School Diploma/GED  

  • Associate’s Degree (preferably in Science) and two years of lab processing experience  

  • OR Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Medical Laboratory Science can substitute for two years of experience 

 

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:   

  • Bachelor’s Degree 


Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform specimen handling techniques and to take measurements

  • Ability to move about the designated work area and ability to travel throughout the hospital campus.

  • Ability to perform work in a stationary position for extended periods of time. 

  • Handles and transports bio hazardous materials.

  • Visual acuity with the ability to differentiate color, hue, saturation and tones.

  • Must be able to lift and/or carry up to 25 pounds.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as defined in the exposure control plan.
