Role Overview:

To provide leadership and support for doctors in your allocated Bupa Health Centre, working collaboratively with other members of the management team to ensure provision of high standards of clinical practice and customer service

What you’ll do: 

As the Lead physician, your duties will involve but not limited to:

Clinical Support and Management

  • Delivery of health assessment and private GP/primary care products at Bupa Health Centres, On-site locations or remotely according to contract (NB London LP’s may be asked to cover any London Site).

  • Provide clinical input into the review of customer feedback comments, complaints, incidents and risks.

  • Oversee the provision and clinical quality of health assessment and private GP/primary care products by the doctors within the centre or within remote services.

  • To partner with local administrative teams, and Centre/Team Managers, supporting diary management and scheduling for optimal service delivery.

  • If issues arise (identified either by you or a member of your centre team/remote team) then to investigate, ensuring clinical safety is always upheld.

  • Conduct clinical audits as per Bupa Health Clinics’ clinical audit schedule, overseen by the Quality Team.

  • Lead on the implementation of clinical policies and procedures with instruction and guidance from the Clinics Primary Care [leadership] Team.

  • Support key policies including the Management of Medicines policy are implemented in your centre (or remotely where applicable) in relation to service line

  • Act as a key stakeholder to support the centre (or remote service) and doctors/primary care clinicians in preparing for CQC visits.

  • Act as a key advisory and support point to staff within the centre (or remotely), and other LPs – ensure clinical guidance is provided to all colleagues as /when required.

  • Lead on the delivery of mock scenarios and emergency clinical procedures within the centre (or remotely if applicable)

  • Support the Centre Manager/ Team Manager and centre team/remote support team to drive better centre or remote services performance – the role holder is required to understand the centre’s/remote service’s income, expenses, business and financial targets, and to support optimising and achieving these

  • Provide advisory support to Bupa Anytime Healthline’s nurses during working hours when requested

  • In exceptional circumstances provide emergency clinical delivery when needed.

Governance & Compliance

  • To ensure good compliance with Bupa Health Clinics’ key clinical policies and procedures, by the centre’s/remote service’s doctor/primary care clinical team.

  • Engage in incident reporting and investigation as outlined in our BHC incident Management and Reporting policy.

  • Support Centre Manager/ Team Manager in the management of complaints as per Bupa’s Complaints policy. Escalate to senior colleagues where appropriate.

  • Carry out cross centre investigations as an independent investigator if required.

  • To be aware of Doctor responsibilities from the GMC Good Medical Practice guidance.

  • Comply with national guidelines and regulatory requirements, including but not limited to NICE and CQC.

  • Comply with Quality Audits and GMC requirements.

People Management

  • Work with Bupa’s recruitment team to determine competency of new candidates.

  • Provide a full and complete clinical induction to train new doctors into the centre or remote service.

  • Manage a team comprised of salaried, self-employed and locum doctors (requirements for each of these doctors differs and only employed fall under Bupa people policies).

  • Monitor and act on doctor/primary care clinician performance data, customer feedback and failsafe reports.

  • Partner with the Centre Manager/Team Manager on people management issues relating to doctors/primary care clinicians which may include liaising with the Employment Relations (ER) Team where there are performance, absence, competency and conduct concerns.

Doctors reviews and appraisals

  • Arrange and undertake notes audits, and annual clinical reviews in alignment with the clinical review policy.

  • To become trained as a GMC appraiser and undertake appraisals for doctors who have Bupa as their designated body.

What you’ll bring: 

  • GMC registered with a licence to practice and on the GP register

  • Substantial postgraduate experience (minimum 5 years as a GP)

  • MRCGP

  • Member of a Medical Defence Organisation

  • Experience in complaint handling

  • Experience in managing incidents and significant events

  • Experience in delivering high levels of customer satisfaction whilst maintaining commercial focus

  • Experience in managing underperformance/disagreements

  • Undertakes regular CPD activities in line with requirements of appraisal and revalidation

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) training certificate

  • Current Safeguarding Level 3 training certificate

  • Previous experience as an appraiser, mentor and in some kind of leadership role is desirable

  • Committed to the role of the private healthcare sector in the UK; with a strong passion for delivering more affordable healthcare, with better health outcomes, for our customers

  • IT Proficiency including, MS office, e-records and e-prescribing

  • Understands national guidance (including NICE, NSFs) and applies to practice; able to research evidence to improve quality

  • Ability to work well in and lead a team

  • High standard of communication and interpersonal skills

  • Excellent organisational skills

  • Strong influencing and negotiation skills

  • Confident decision making

  • Good standard of written and spoken English
