Operating Room

The Denver Health Inpatient Operating Room is an 11-room, highly specialized surgical unit that provides 24/7 surgical care to patients with complex and high-acuity needs. Serving the community of Denver, the State of Colorado, and surrounding states, the unit supports a full spectrum of surgical services through continuous staffing, which minimizes the need for call while maintaining exceptional patient care.
Staffed by a highly experienced and skilled clinical team, the Inpatient OR specializes in a wide range of surgery services, including:
• General surgery
• Trauma
• Spine and Neurosurgery
• Bariatric
• Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT)
• Genitourinary and Gynecology (GU/GYN)
• Plastics and Hand
• Gender affirmation
• Pediatrics
• Oral maxillofacial and Dental
• Ophthalmology
• Orthopedics
• Oncology
• Vascular surgery
The unit also houses a state-of-the-art Hybrid Operating Room, allowing for advanced image-guided vascular and endovascular procedures.

Additionally, the Denver Health Bariatric Surgery Center—located within the inpatient OR—is the only MBSAQIP-certified (Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program) hospital in Denver serving both adolescents (ages 16–20) and adults (ages 21–65).

The nurse-to-patient ratio in the Inpatient OR is 1:1, ensuring highly personalized surgical care.

Job Summary

Perform routine and specialized functions relating to technical support under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, functions as a member of the Perioperative Services team. Collaborates with the Charge Nurse, Registered Nurse (RN), Surgical Tech (ST) and other member of the healthcare team. Oversees the work of the Perioperative Support Tech Team. Completes duties and tasks as assigned. Maintains unit specific documentation as required. Stocks, manages, and utilizes supplies for the Operating Room (OR). Demonstrates the equivalent skill competencies and professional development of the Perioperative Support Tech (PST) as required by the division.

Essential Functions:
  • Oversees daily perioperative support technician operations including supervision of all assigned staff to ensure all operational activities occur in an accurate and timely manner. (10%)
  • Communicates and trains or coordinates perioperative support technicians to appropriately train staff regarding policies & procedures. (10%)
  • Monitors staff’s adherence to the policies & procedures and takes action when they are not followed. (10%)
  • Attends or participates in other programs, committees, in-service meetings and functions required by the perioperative department. (10%)
  • Delivers positive customer service and follow up on customer and employee issues/complaints. (10%)
  • Develops and implements work schedules and assignments to ensure appropriate staffing. As needed, finds coverage during periods of high volume, staff shortages and emergencies. Assures that approved work schedule is posted in a timely manner. (10%)
  • Monitors daily staff attendance to assure compliance with organizational and departmental policy. As necessary due to employee absence, redirects work schedule assignments to assure that critical positions are staffed. (10%)
  • Assists with the completion of the hiring and disciplinary paper work with documentation. (10%)
  • Identifies training and staff development needs of employees and ensures appropriate training provided. (10%)
  • Works with the management to provide and document initial and ongoing training to staff as required. (5%)
  • Prepares various reports, maintains records or supervises the maintenance of records as required or requested by the supervisor or manager. (5%)

Education:
  • Post High School Diploma or Certificate Program Required

Work Experience:
  • 1-3 years Two years of experience in health care, Required and

Licenses:
  • BLS-Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) - AHA - American Heart Association Required and
  • CNA-Certified Nurse Aide - ANCC - American Nurses Credentialing Center Required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of and the ability to use medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care.
  • Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment.
  • Skill in maintaining records and recording test results.
  • Ability to maintain quality control standards.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and applicability of the principles of growth and development over the life span, as well as demonstrating the ability to assess data reflecting the patient’s status and interpreting appropriate cultural information of the patient(s) to whom care/services is being delivered/provided.
  • Skilled in maintain effective working relationship with patients, employees and the public.
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate clearly.
  • Ability to work together as a team; collaborating and delegating duties.
  • Ability to cooperate with co-workers to participate productively in the group environments.
  • Ability to adjust care given based on volume, acuity, cases, census and department needs without jeopardizing patient or making patient feel less important.
  • Ability to plan and effectively organize work and establish priorities.
  • Ability to handle the majority of instructions/directions provided without assistance of other caregivers.
  • Ability to discern when to seek assistance in order to ensure quality patient care.
  • Demonstrated patience and care at all times when dealing directly with patients and families.
  • EPIC documentation, preferred.
  • Dazo Dot/Ecolab Auditing Documentation, preferred.
