About the Role
The Lead Account Manager, Commercial Lines is a fully competent, experienced insurance professional responsible for overseeing a portfolio of mid-size to large, often complex commercial accounts. This role serves as the primary point of contact for assigned clients and drives strategic coverage recommendations, renewal planning, and risk management analysis.
Lead Account Managers independently apply established standards and insurance principles, demonstrating how these principles impact a wide range of client situations. They develop coverage strategies, manage complex service needs, guide clients through nuanced insurance considerations, and partner with carriers to secure optimal program outcomes.
This role also supports the development of others—mentoring or onboarding new Account Managers and assisting them in making key decisions regarding client accounts. Lead Account Managers uphold high service standards, contribute to retention and growth goals, and model professionalism within the Commercial Lines team.
Responsibilities
Serve as the primary relationship manager for assigned clients, owning day-to-day service, renewal planning, and escalation needs.
Develop and execute coverage strategy and account service plans tailored to client risk profiles, operational needs, and market conditions.
Apply advanced knowledge of insurance principles to evaluate exposures and guide clients through coverage structure, protection strategies, and pricing considerations.
Conduct comprehensive account reviews and ensure alignment of client programs with evolving business needs.
Independently collaborate with Client Advisors on marketing strategy, carrier selection, and program design for complex accounts.
Analyze carrier proposals, negotiate terms as needed, and prepare clear, professional recommendations for clients.
Monitor carrier performance to ensure delivery on commitments, including policy issuance, endorsements, and claims handling.
Anticipate client needs and proactively recommend solutions, improvements, or additional coverages.
Handle initial claim reports and oversee claim progression, ensuring client expectations are met and communication remains timely and accurate.
Inform clients of industry, regulatory, or carrier changes that may impact coverage or risk exposure.
Identify and execute on rounding and crosssell opportunities across commercial, personal, benefits, and specialty lines.
Support new business efforts by delivering exceptional client experiences and seeking referrals.
Mentor, guide, and support onboarding of new or junior Account Managers.
Provide expertise and coaching on coverage concepts, account handling, system workflows, and client communication.
Participate in or lead team meetings, process improvements, and internal initiatives.
Maintain accurate and compliant client records within the agency management system.
Uphold agency standards, policies, and procedures, including confidentiality requirements.
Maintain all required insurance licenses and continuing education.
Requirements
Significant professional experience in commercial lines account management and/or sales, with proven ability to manage complex accounts.
Strong verbal and written communication skills with professional grammar, clarity, and accuracy.
High degree of critical thinking, with the ability to make independent decisions and solve ambiguous problems.
Demonstrated proficiency with MS Office and familiarity with Agency Management Systems; Applied Epic preferred.
Strong math or accounting acumen.
Ability to adapt quickly to shifting priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Ability to work independently with supervision only by exception, as well as collaboratively within a team.
Commitment to maintaining current knowledge of insurance industry trends, coverage developments, and technology.
Education & Experience
Bachelor’s degree and/or 5+ years commercial insurance experience or recognized equivalent.
Active Property & Casualty license required.
Must maintain all required state licenses and pursue continued professional development (e.g., CISR Elite, CIC, or other advanced designations).
Candidates should be comfortable with an on-site presence to support collaboration, team leadership, and cross-functional partnership.
