Job Description:

The Oregon State Police in Clackamas, Oregon is hiring for one (1) Full-Time, Permanent Laboratory Technician 2 – Chemistry position. This position is an in-office position without the option for a remote or hybrid work schedule.

Summary of Job Duties:

In this position, you will perform support duties for analytical staff, including but not limited to reagent preparation and testing; quality control checks of instrumentation and equipment; maintaining accurate records and other logs for accreditation; inventorying and ordering chemicals, supplies, and equipment; maintaining laboratory instruments and equipment; facilitating vehicle maintenance; maintaining cleanliness in the laboratory; and working to mitigate issues in the facility.

Minimum Qualifications:

Two years of experience performing routine, standardized analytical tests and laboratory procedures in accordance with well-defined written instructions AND high school courses in chemistry, biology, mathematics, or any course which included laboratory work;

OR

A bachelor’s degree in biology, Chemistry, Microbiology, or a closely related field.

NOTE: An associate degree in laboratory science may substitute for one year of the required experience.

Preferred Skills:

  • Demonstrated general lab knowledge and performing laboratory procedures to include, but not limited to, the preparation of solutions, working with scientific instrumentation, maintaining accurate records, and detailed note taking.

  • Experience inventorying and ordering chemicals, supplies, and equipment.

  • Demonstrated experience supporting a professional program by working independently as well as part of a team without direct supervision.

  • Demonstrated ability to work under pressure, meet both scheduled and unexpected deadlines, pivot to meet the changing needs of the work unit and respond in a professional manner under stress.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a diverse audience to provide information in a clear, effective, and professional manner.

Special Qualifications:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License.

  • Must be able to provide credible sworn testimony in a criminal or civil proceeding arising from the performance of duties.

  • As a condition of employment and / or to routinely work in any of the Forensic Services Division’s laboratories in any capacity, all individuals are required to provide appropriate samples for inclusion into the Confidential Staff DNA Identification Index.

  • Must pass a urine analysis drug screen.

Prior to being hired with the Oregon State Police Forensics Division, you will be required to participate in a full background investigation process which will include a Criminal History Check and a Credit History Check when applicable. These positions, in the course of regular business activities, are responsible for the handling, management and/or analysis of several types of sensitive evidence, including bank statements, checks, debit and credit card information, and other financial records that contain financial information not customarily provided in a retail transaction. Forensic employees also handle, manage and/or analyze large amounts of cash, firearms, jewelry, controlled substances, and other valuable property collected as evidence during on-going criminal investigations.
