Title

Lab Clinical Information System Analyst

The Lab Clinical Information System Analyst (Epic Certified) is responsible for activities related to the report writer/analyst focused to lab quality, safety, change management, clinical test utilization and laboratory business initiatives supporting patient care activities, clinical and anatomic labs, outreach and projects related to creating reports in Epic and understanding what the data represents.  Employees providing direct patient care must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served.

Job Education and Certification requirements:

  • 5+ years of clinical laboratory experience. 
  • Epic Beaker and other lab clinical software knowledge. 
  • Familiarity with laboratory business operations, lab terminology and documentation to support troubleshooting, planning, testing, developing and analysis of internal lab report data is required.
  • BS degree in medical technology, biological/microbiological science, chemistry or related field
  • NAACLS accredited Medical Laboratory Technician, Medical Technologist, or Medical Laboratory Scientist certification is a requirement.
  • All individuals must have completed certification OR be registry eligible and complete certification within one year of hire through ASCP, AMT or equivalent credential in Medical Laboratory Science or Medical Technology.
  • All individuals who are newly ASCP certified after January 1, 2004, or newly AMT certified after January 1, 2006, must maintain ongoing certification.

Job Requirements

  • Working knowledge of healthcare lab operations in inpatient and/or ambulatory setting required
  • Experience with Epic or other laboratory information systems i.e., HC1, quality control software, laboratory instrumentation, DI
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to work with end users to determine data needed for evaluation and process improvement workflows
  • Ability to create system documentation, project plans, test scripts and education materials
  • General familiarity of end user business practices, concepts, terminology sufficient to support the applications in a healthcare delivery environment
  • Good customer service skills with the ability to communicate with internal and external customers both orally and in writing
  • Must be able to interact with customers from various levels in the organization to gather the information necessary to understand, address, and document their data needs
  • Must consistently negotiate and act on deliverables and timeframes with stakeholders, take ownership of issues, and respond to issues within expected timeframes

Role and Responsibilities

  • Develops and maintains collegial relationships and regular communication with all Lab Department Users, System Coordinators, IT staff and Vendors as relates to systems in area of responsibility
  • Understand the choices involved in lab application specifications
  • Investigate and analyze end user preferences/report requests and business operations while making build decisions
  • Analyze new application functionality in releases to determine how it could be used
  • Develop and document internal procedures to use in conjunction with the applications and reports and document all corrective actions
  • Work with report writers to ensure that the application has the necessary data for reports
  • Keeps abreast of developments in the information systems and communications field and evaluates developments for applicability or incorporation into existing applications
  • Evaluates systems, processing, and development needs and recommends additional equipment or new systems
  • Be capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either must correct the problems or immediately notify the supervisor
  • Participate in Laboratory Quality Program activities with emphasis on assuring compliance with patient safety, laboratory, hospital, and accreditation standards
  • Participates in the preparation and authoring of supporting documentation, instruction manuals, and audit trails of program changes in accordance with systems and programming standards
  • Collaborate with information technology, customer, and vendor teams in the evaluation of lab report development and analysis efforts, in planning the pilot and full implementation of new process and/or new features, and in processing user feedback and requests
  • Maintain a detailed understanding and working knowledge of the current clinical information systems, their functions, and their relationship to other Bronson information systems
  • Participate in the process of revising and implementing changes in both the automated and manual components of the lab clinical information systems
  • Demonstrated degree of independent judgment and critical thinking, consulting with the leaders when appropriate
  • Provide proactive user support of the clinical information systems, working with the System Coordinators, IT teams, Lab leadership teams
  • Maintains competencies and certification through approved methods of continuing education

Working Conditions

Work which produces high levels of mental/visual fatigue, e.g., interactive and repetitive or small detailed work requiring alertness and concentration for sustained periods of time, the operation of and full attention to a personal computer or CRT between 40 and 70 percent of the time. The job produces some physical demands. Typical of jobs that include regular walking, standing, stooping, bending, sitting, and some lifting of light weight objects.
