The Position

Shape the Future of Medical Diagnostics: Internship in Blood Gas & Electrolyte Sensor Development

Our team, «BGE Sensors & Reagents,» develops, characterizes, and optimizes various electrochemical sensors for medical devices in the field of IVD diagnostics, focusing on the measurement of blood gases, electrolytes, and metabolites in whole blood. To deliver the desired products, we select electrochemical, optical, or enzymatic measurement principles and develop the corresponding sensors.

The opportunity

Dive into the world of cutting-edge sensor development with a 6-12 month internship (flexible to fit your schedule). You'll collaborate with our expert team to design, test, and optimize electrochemical sensors used in life-saving medical devices. This is your chance to apply your scientific knowledge to real-world challenges and contribute to groundbreaking advancements in healthcare. In this position, you will

  • Collaborate with our technical experts in the development and enhancement of sensors for blood gas analysis.

  • Contribute to sensor design investigations by planning and conducting various physical and chemical experiments and tests. You will assist in the synthesis and characterization of different functional sensor components.

  • Help improve material stability to extend shelf life and reduce the need for complex storage by optimizing the chemical composition and synthesis processes.

  • Support the development team with your scientific expertise and gain a deep understanding of complex electrochemical sensors and processes, including their characterization and optimization.

  • Manage assigned work packages, plan and execute experiments, and prepare detailed analyses and documentation. You will have access to various analytical methods and tools for sensor and material analysis, as well as data analysis software to compile technical reports.

  • Receive a comprehensive introduction to the intricate and challenging field of sensor development for globally used medical devices.

Who you Are

We are looking for a motivated and inquisitive student or recent graduate with a background in Engineering/Science (e.g., Master's or PhD degree from a Technical University), ideally in  Biomedical, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, or a related field. You should have some initial experience in biochemical sensor characterization and sensor simulation development (including Python coding, computational chemistry, sensor testing, and characterization). Your graduation should be within the last 12 months of the start date. Additionally:

  • You are eager to gain practical experience in an industrial setting and learn about development processes within a leading medical device company.

  • You are interested in developing electrochemical sensors, which you will help produce, measure using chemical and electrochemical methods, analyze the resulting data, and study in silico simulations.

  • You have a structured and independent approach to conducting experiments and documenting results.

  • You are open, adaptable, and a team player.

  • You possess strong written and verbal communication skills in English (and preferably German).

Additional information

  • Start Date: August 2026

  • Workload: 100%

  • Duration: Minimum 6 months (with potential for extension to 12 months)

Application process

Please submit your complete application, including:
