ROLE PURPOSE
The Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Intern supports the site EHS team by helping maintain and improve EHS management systems, written programs, training content, and compliance activities. This role partners closely with the Sr. Manager, EHS and cross-functional stakeholders to strengthen safety culture, improve leading indicator performance, and support routine environmental and safety inspections, assessments, and follow-up actions.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Program Updates, Training, and Metrics
- Review and assist with updates to EHS written programs, which may include Lockout/Tagout, Hot Work, Combustible Dust, Contractor Safety, Confined Space Entry, Respiratory Protection, Powered Industrial Truck, and Fire/Emergency-Related procedures
- Update the Mott EHS Training Curriculum to align with written program updates and ensure training content remains current and usable
- Review, summarize, and trend EHS leading indicator metrics; identify themes and opportunities for action
- Participate in the site’s Safety Committee; help structure meeting agendas, capture minutes, and track follow-up actions to closure
- Support implementation of a formal Ergonomics/Stretching program, including drafting a written program, developing department-specific stretching routines, and participating in shift huddles to help embed the behavior into daily work
Environmental & Safety Compliance Support
- Support routine environmental inspections and reporting activities related to Hazardous Waste management, Connecticut-Regulated Waste management, Industrial Stormwater, and Industrial Wastewater discharges
- Participate in routine safety assessments, walk-throughs, and hazard reviews; document observations and support corrective action follow-up
- Assist with incident investigations, action item tracking, and verification of completion to help prevent recurrence
- Complete other EHS-related tasks and special projects as assigned by the Sr. Manager, EHS
EXPECTED PERFORMANCE OUTCOMES
- Positive impact on the organization’s safety culture through visible participation, follow-through, and clear, respectful communication
- Improved timeliness and quality of EHS documentation (written programs, procedures, checklists, inspection forms, and meeting minutes) with appropriate version control
- Training content and curriculum updates completed on schedule and aligned to current written programs and site requirements
- More actionable visibility into leading indicators (e.g., inspections, observations, corrective actions, training completion) through accurate trending and concise summaries
- Consistent support of routine environmental and safety inspections, with findings documented clearly and follow-up actions tracked to closure
- Timely assistance with incident investigations and corrective actions, including accurate notes, evidence collection support, and action item verification
- Effective Safety Committee support (structured agendas, complete minutes, and documented action items) that improves engagement and follow-through
- Ergonomics/Stretching program launched with defined scope, written guidance, department-specific routines, and reinforcement in shift huddles
- Increased knowledge base of safety and environmental regulations, site standards, and common EHS controls through hands-on program updates, inspections, and data review
TECHNICAL & FUNCTIONAL SKILLS
- Basic knowledge of safety and environmental regulations and willingness to learn site-specific requirements
- Strong attention to detail for document review, procedure formatting, and recordkeeping (including version control and audit readiness)
- Effective written and verbal communication skills; able to collaborate with operations, maintenance, and office teams
- Ability to conduct routine inspections/observations using checklists, document findings objectively, and escalate concerns appropriately
- Foundational hazard recognition and risk assessment skills (identify hazards, understand controls, and support corrective action development)
- Basic understanding of incident investigation concepts (fact gathering, contributing factors, and corrective actions) and ability to support data collection
- Ability to support EHS training administration (tracking completion, organizing materials, and assisting with revisions) while maintaining confidentiality
- Basic data analysis skills (Excel or similar): ability to maintain logs, create simple charts, and trend leading indicators
- Environmental compliance fundamentals (waste identification/segregation concepts, labeling, storage/inspection expectations, and spill prevention awareness)
- Awareness of common industrial hygiene and ergonomics topics (PPE basics, exposure pathways, noise/dust awareness, and workstation/force/posture considerations)
- Ability to troubleshoot and problem-solve at-risk safety or environmental conditions, including recommending practical controls and escalating urgent hazards

The starting compensation for this position is $25.00 per hour. This position may be eligible for performance based bonus plan.
