Texas A&M International University (TAMIU), a member of the Texas A&M University System, welcomes applicants for an Instructional Assistant Professor of Music/Director of Mariachi to begin Fall 2026

This is a non-tenure three-year faculty position with the possibility of renewal depending on performance, departmental needs, and institutional goals. Primary duties will include 1) teaching 15 semester credit hours per semester (teaching load may be reduced with approval of the department chair, the college dean, and the provost); 2) coaching and mentoring undergraduate music students in the Mariachi ensemble(s); 3) engaging in active recruitment efforts on campus, in regional secondary schools, and throughout the community; 4) planning and maintaining an active concert agenda for TAMIU Mariachi Internacional and planning the Mariachi Festival; 5) teaching music classes depending on the candidate’s qualifications; 6) providing service to and actively participating in departmental, college, and university initiatives; and 7) actively writing and applying for external programmatic/innovation grants that will enhance the music program and Mariachi-related activities and resources. Duties also include service to the Music Program, including attending faculty meetings, supervising music students in community-based projects as appropriate, and other duties as assigned by the department chair. This position requires face-to-face interactions through a regular schedule of attendance on campus and in the workplace. 

The Department of Fine and Performing Arts, within the College of Arts & Sciences, serves as a cultural hub for the Laredo community and includes the disciplines of Visual Art, Dance, Music, and Theatre. The department is committed to excellence in teaching and the development of future artists.

Required Qualifications

The successful candidate must hold a 1) an earned master’s degree in music from an accredited institution, with an emphasis in mariachi performance, mariachi education, or a closely related field. 2) Active professional experience as a mariachi musician, with at least five years of experience coaching or directing mariachi ensembles, or equivalent professional experience. 3) Ability to coach and mentor undergraduate music students in mariachi ensembles. 4) Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues in the Department of Fine and Performing Arts. 5) Ability to interact professionally and effectively with students. We strongly encourage candidates with prior experience teaching at the university level and experience building or sustaining mariachi programs are highly desirable.
