A doula is a specially trained birth companion (not a friend or loved one) who provides labor support. The doula performs no clinical tasks. Doulas can also be trained to help families develop birth plans prior to the birth and/or after birth, assist with breastfeeding support and advice, and screen for postpartum mood disorders. The doula for this position will be working in the Perryville and Estrella prisons.

We Require
Bachelor’s Degree in Public Health, Health Education, Nursing, or a related field
Successfully completed all practicum births and currently holds a credential from DONA, Doulas International, or a similar accredited institution (state, national, or international)
A combination of post-secondary education and/or job-related experience may substitute for the minimum qualifications on a year-for-year basis

Job Contributions
Doula will attend the birth of the participant, providing emotional support, facilitating comfort measures, advocating for the birth plan, and charting the birth journey
Provide Doula services to women in the Estrella Jail and/or Perryville
Services include prenatal education, including anatomy, pregnancy processes, body changes, mental health support, birth process, and post-natal education
Complete and submit Doula Birth Summary forms to Doulas of North America (DONA) or any other certifying Doula agency and SPHS
Doula will teach group childbirth classes to women in Perryville prison
Complete and document doula prison visits, including prenatal visits
Work with the Doula Project Coordinator, SPHS, Jail, and prison staff to receive referrals
Adhere to Doulas of North America/DONA International and MCDPH code of conduct, standards of practice, education, and project timelines, reporting requirements, and reimbursement request guidelines
Attend assigned monthly meetings
Working Conditions
Valid Arizona driver’s license is required upon hire
Will require traveling to various jails and prisons throughout Maricopa County, subject to County policies regarding use of a County or private vehicle used on County business
Must complete the “Doula Behind Bars” training and a child birth certification
Must secure and maintain an Arizona Department of Public Safety Level 1 Fingerprint Clearance Card and complete a background check
CPR and First Aid (adult and infant) will be required within the first six months of employment
Within one month of hire, all employees will be required to provide evidence of immunity or receive immunizations for vaccine-preventable illnesses for any position within the Maricopa County Department of Public Health; required immunizations include MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), Tdap (whooping cough and diphtheria), Varicella (chickenpox), and annual Influenza; some positions require a Hepatitis B vaccine and/or a Tuberculosis test
