Job Description

Our Madoc, ON facility operates a fully integrated mining and manufacturing site where we produce and distribute coloured granules used in shingle production. The operation includes a 400-acre open pit mine, an industrial crushing and colouring plant, distribution services, and ongoing construction projects.

As a mining and rock-crushing environment, this role involves working in an active industrial setting. The plant is not climate controlled, and operations create naturally dusty conditions. Access throughout both five-level plants is via platforms and open-grated stairs.

Located 30 minutes north of Belleville, ON, Madoc is a rural community of approximately 1,000 residents. The plant is situated 5 km west of town in a country setting. Company-owned housing is available free of charge next to the facility. Please note that reliable personal transportation is required, as public transit is not available in the area.

When you join us you will:

  • Supports the development, implementation and maintenance of the HSE management system that is aligned to but not limited to ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001, and Certificate of Recognition (COR).
  • Assists in the mitigation and management of HSE risks (e.g. regulatory review, audits, etc.)
  • Assists in the processing, tracking, recording and reporting of accident and incident data (e.g. total reportable injury rate, lost time injury rate, etc.)
  • Monitors key performance indicators and compiles HSE performance reports.
  • Assists in the development and distribution of HSE communication to internal team members.
  • Support the development and execution of HSE training programs as required.
  • Conducts field inspections/job observations; HSE audits and other types of reviews to monitor compliance to HSE requirements and to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Communicates observations, non-compliance and risks to stakeholders, and provides and implements corrective and preventative measure to ensure compliance and mitigate risks.
  • Assists in the tracking and completion of audit findings and other action items/deliverables.
  • Investigates and resolves incidents as required.
  • Conducts root-cause analysis, identifies incident causes, and implements corrective and preventative measures.
  • Reviews and implements modifications to work plans, processes, procedures to reduce recurring incidents and improve HSE performance.
  • Monitors and assesses current processes to look for efficiencies and continuously improve the management system.

Our ideal candidate would be:

  • Current student enrolled in a post-secondary Co-op education program in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Environmental Science with a preference towards senior students.
  • Strong interest in health and safety and/or environmental studies
  • Excellent organization and analytical skills
  • Strong communication (written, verbal, presentation) and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to establish priorities and work effectively in a team
  • Strong technical writing skills to be able to create documents for an adult learning audience
  • Strong commitment to the Health and Safety and the Environment Preferred
  • Knowledge of health, safety and/or environmental legislation will be an asset
  • Prior experience in an industrial manufacturing environment would be an asset
  • Ability to read and interpret safety and environmental legislation and engineering documents
  • Excellent working knowledge of tools like MS Office (Word, Excel, Power Point), SharePoint, etc.
  • Candidates must have their own transportation as travel may be required.

Wage:

  • $21/hour - $24/hour

Transportation and Housing:

Transport - Candidates must arrange for their own transportation. This is a very rural setting and no form of public transportation is available, therefore access to your own vehicle is required

Housing - Accommodation local to the plant (2 minute drive) is available as part of the Co-op placement at no extra cost
