Job Summary: The Fisher House Program provides temporary accommodations and support for accompanying individuals who provide familial or equivalent support to Veterans and active-duty Service members receiving treatment at major military and Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) medical facilities. Assistant manager is responsible for on-site management, planning, operation and administrative coordination of the lodging program.

Major Duties:

  • Major duties include but not limited to: Explains Fisher House and Center for Development & Civic Engagement (CDCE) policies, procedures and regulations to employees, Veterans, family members, caregivers and visitors to the Thomas H. Corey VA Medical Center and West Palm Beach Healthcare System. Interacts professionally with patients, visitors, guests, clinical providers, military liaisons, volunteers, community supporters, executive leadership, VA employees, Fisher House Foundation personnel, congressional staff and public while remaining conscious of multiple cultures, abilities, and generations. Maintains automated program databases to manage the Fisher House and Center for Development and Civic Engagement (CDCE) to ensure timely and accurate documentation of Fisher House referrals along with medical center and Fisher House donations. Gathers information, identifying and analyzing issues, and developing recommendations to resolve substantive problems of effectiveness and efficiency of work operations in the Fisher House and Center for Development & Civic Engagement (CDCE) programs. Plans, schedules, coordinates and monitors the operation and administrative management and efficient use of the Fisher House and CDCE programs and resources. Resolves a variety of problems related to Fisher House and CDCE operations and management formulating procedures; and inspecting and evaluating the efficiency of operations; and affects the quality and efficiency of the facility's services to Veteran's family members during their stay at Fisher House. Exercises tact, diplomacy, ingenuity, and skill in gaining acceptance of plans, schedules, technical or policy requirements which may form the basis of conflict. Exercises independent judgment in choosing, interpreting, or adapting guidelines to specific issues and situations related to the Fisher House and CDCE program and operations. Participates in designing and marketing activities and products that educate the public about the Fisher House mission and its interrelationship with the Medical Center, benefits provided to families of veterans and active-duty military members. Greets and orients guests to the house and safety procedures. Conducts tours of and orientation to the Fisher House. Plans for and arranges open houses, special dinners, and holiday activities. Ability to interpret VA and VHA directives, and Fisher House management procedures and general business/housing management principles and practices. Knowledge of Medical Center's computer systems and related programs for inputting and extracting data, maintaining data bases, spreadsheets, and other electronically stored data for analyzing occupancy rates, work orders, control points, etc. as well as proven analysis and report generating abilities based on the use of trending data. Knowledge of appropriate vs. inappropriate workplace boundaries and must never engage in inappropriate relationships with guests, patients, volunteers, or other staff members. Qualifications: To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 05/15/2026. Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-11 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-09. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Plans, schedules, coordinates and monitors the operation and administrative management and efficient use of the program and resources. Gathers information, identifying and analyzing issues, and developing recommendations to resolve substantive problems of effectiveness and efficiency of work operations in the program. Interacts professionally with patients, visitors, guests, clinical providers, military liaisons, volunteers, community supporters, executive leadership, VA employees, Fisher House Foundation personnel, congressional staff and public while remaining conscious of multiple cultures, abilities, and generations. Collaborates with services or organizations to account for all donations (cash and in-kind donations) and expenditures. Maintains the database to ensure accuracy of currently lodged guests, upcoming departures and needs for extension, cancellations and re-bookings, daily room availability and all projected lodging needs. OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.M., if related. Such education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work. OR, Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have a combination of specialized experience and education beyond 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or a masters degree.
