Salary: $45,000/yr plus benefits
Key Duties:
● Maintain positive relations with visitors, being courteous, respectful, and exercising flexibility
to best serve the public during all work activities.
● Assists with and leads living history programs, both those in place and newly created ones, for
onsite and outreach use. Many historical programs require the individual to wear historical clothing based upon the time periods of the Fort Towson and Doaksville sites, and at times other Oklahoma Historical Society sites and museums.
● Researches and compiles historical information pertaining to the sites and topics overseen by the FTHS staff. This includes physical and digital content.
● Prepares for public programs/presentations/events and exhibition/displays relating to the sites. Leads tours of the museum and site(s) to groups and individual adults and children.
● Performs museum duties, including cash register operation, securing and processing revenue according to policy and procedure, assisting with collections, assisting with the museum store, and answering the phone.
● Creates educational posts and videos for social media platforms including Facebook and YouTube while following the OHS Style Guide and Americans with Disabilities Act.
● Conducts custodial tasks in assigned work areas including the museum, Sutler Store, and other structures and areas. Work activities in this area include contributing to a safe, secure, clean, and orderly environment for the public and staff.
● Oversee research requests submitted by the public via email, phone, in person, and Facebook messenger. The requests to focus on will mainly be about people and history focused on the military post, Doaksville, Doaksville cemetery, pre-statehood history of the basic area, Rose Hill, and the Heroine.
● Will at times go to other OHS sites and museums to help with events.
● Will at times go to other non-OHS institutions, organizations, museums, and sites to help with their events or promote FTHS.
● Be able to drive or learn to drive a dually truck as this is the type of vehicle assigned to the site.
● Walk the site for inspiration and see what improvements need to be made.
● 40 hours a week.
● Must be able to work Saturdays.
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in History or related field.
Previous experience at a historic site or museum is desirable.
Skills, Proficiencies, and/or Knowledge:
Demonstrated ability to adapt well to changing priorities, situations, and day-to-day demands.
Demonstrated ability and willingness to effectively manage time and resources.
Must possess strong writing, communication, and organizational skills.
Commitment to continue personal professional development.
Demonstrated abilities in historical research.
Demonstrated abilities in designing, promoting, presenting, and evaluating educational programs and the desire to program to reach diverse audiences.
Ability is required to memorize tour materials.
