Job Summary: This position is located in the Department of Homeland Security, US Coast Guard, YARD, Industrial Department, Mechanical Group in Baltimore, MD.

Major Duties:

  • You will be responsible for modifying the full range of systems, components, and operating mechanisms. Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team. Typical work assignments include: Disassembling diesel or gasoline engines. Modifying major systems, components and operating mechanisms, using independent judgment following guidelines taken from manufacturers' instructions and parts manuals. Overhauling major heavy-duty systems such as diesel, multi-fuel, and gasoline engines, transmissions and gear reduction systems. Overhauling the full range of systems on heavy vehicles and equipment. Inspecting, repairing or replacing such parts as injection valves, cylinder heads, cylinder sleeves, pistons, rings, connecting rods, bearings, gaskets, and crankshafts. Repairing various specialized mechanical parts of equipment such as crawler tracks and drives, winches, bulldozer blades, scoops, excavating and loading bucket chains, and other working attachments and their power take-off and control mechanisms. Repairing hydraulic pumps and cylinders, air compressors, air control valves, air cylinders, etc. Mandatory training is required which must be successfully completed and other training may occur as necessary for success in the position.

Applicants will be rated and ranked based on their knowledge of the following job elements: * Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision (SCREENOUT) * Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, repair, etc. * Technical practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) * Use of measuring instruments * Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. (includes blueprint reading) * Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment * Troubleshooting National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
