The primary purpose of this position, HEATING, VENTILATION, AIR CONDITIONING MECHANIC, WG-5301-10, POTENTIAL WG-11, is to install, maintain, repair, and modify large/complex, heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems and support equipment including electronic/mechanical system controls and distribution lines.

Major Duties:

  • Perform preventive maintenance on HVAC/systems and equipment. Inspect and calibrate electrical/electronic/pneumatic controls and gauges. Inspect equipment for condition and proper operation. Troubleshoot HVAC systems with complex problems and extensive repairs requiring independent judgment to locate malfunctions. Perform essential electrical/electronic work incidental to the maintenance and operation of HVAC systems. Plan and lay out work from blueprints, sketches, drawings, specifications, guides, codes and work orders. Utilize safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintain a safe and clean work environment. Install, modify, overhaul, repair, and maintain a variety of complex large commercial and industrial ventilation, refrigeration, air conditioning, heating boilers and/or heating systems, single and multiple fuel power boilers, and associated auxiliary and pollution control equipment.

Qualifications: In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C. TARGETED POSITION: This position is a developmental WG-10 Target WG-11 position. This position may be filled at any grade level. Individual selection may be promoted without further competition, upon meeting all legal and regulatory requirements. Starting salary indicated on this vacancy announcement is for the (WG-10). Attainment of knowledge, skills, and abilities is required before promotion to the next higher grade and is dependent on demonstrated ability to perform the duties of the next higher grade level, meeting all regulatory requirements, and recommendation for promotion by the supervisor. QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-5300 Industrial Equipment Maintenance Family. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Work encompasses standing, bending, stooping, stretching, and working in strained and cramped conditions. Frequently handles, lifts, and carry items weighing up to 25 pounds and occasionally lifts and moves heavier items with mechanical or human assistance. WORK ENVIRONMENT: The employee works indoors and outdoors on elevated structures, and in cramped areas. Subject to discomfort from face masks or other protective devices when there is a possibility of exposure to chemicals, heat, steam, noise, noxious gases, fumes, or acids. Occasionally, works outside on top of buildings, in drafty attic spaces, and in cramped areas with low overheads. Subject to possible burns, electrical shocks, cuts, strains, bruises, and chemical irritations. To reduce dangers from these and other similar conditions follows prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment such as safety glasses, hard toe shoes, respirators, hard hats, and fire-retardant gloves.
