Job Summary: The Health Technician- Orthotic and Compression Fitter is under Prosthetic and Sensory Aids Service, at the Roudebush VAMC, Indianapolis, IN. The primary purpose of the position is to evaluate and provide compression garments and off the shelf orthotics in the Orthotic Prosthetic Clinical Service prescribed by a physician. Major Duties:

  • Major Duties and Responsibilities: Measures and Fits Patients 100% Provides clinical, administrative, technical, and direct patient care support Under guidance of the Orthotist and/or Prosthetist the incumbent will care for Veteran's compression and OTS orthotic needs Measuring and fitting off the shelf and custom fit devices, such as lumbosacral orthoses, cervical collars, compression hose, knee orthoses, abdominal binders, etc Maintain stock of material compression needs and orthotic devices utilizing the prosthetics inventory package (PIP) Responsible for maintaining their Orthotic Lab work orders in the Prosthetics package Responsible for maintaining electronic progress notes on patients Communicates and instructs patients in proper procedures for wearing and maintaining orthotic/compression devices Use Electronic Health Record (EHR) and Computerized Patient Record System ( CPRS) to document any communication with patients Responsible to keep an organized and clean workbench, general work and storage area Comply with all safety/fire prevention rules/regulations, using protective equipment when required and provided Reports all accidents and notifies supervisor of unsafe/unhealthful conditions in the workplace Perform other duties as assigned Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Qualifications: To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 05/06/2026. Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-6 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-5. For a GS-7 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-6 The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide additional SF-50s that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment. To qualify, you must meet Individual Occupational Requirement (IOR) and you may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: IOR: Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 and above): Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. AND, GS-640-06: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-05). Specialized experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience that includes the following: take measurement using appropriate equipment, customer service skills, operate equipment, knowledge and experience with: medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology, maintenance of confidentiality of patient/employee information, and ability to read prescriptions. Or, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have 9 semester hours of education. NOTE: Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. Or, Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and education. GS-640-07: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-06). Specialized experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience that includes the following: communication and interpersonal relations, including the ability to appropriately and courteously relate to internal and external customers; maintain confidential of patient/employee information, electronic and print; experience using Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS) or it equivalent; knowledge of all safety issues required in machine operation of all potential health hazards involving the use of plastics and chemicals in the fabrication of orthotic fabrications; knowledge and use of all materials and methods of contemporary prosthetic/orthotic practice; experience taking measurements using the appropriate equipment that is usually found in a orthotic and prosthetic clinic; experience reading and understanding prescriptions and applying a thorough grasp of methods, techniques and the sequence followed in the development of orthotic appliances; knowledge of clinical and/or hospital routine, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology. Or, Education: Applicants can use one full year of graduate education to meet the requirements for the GS-7 position in this occupational series as well. Please note: One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended.
