We are seeking a Health and Safety Specialist for our sites in Edmonton, Alberta. The Health and Safety Specialist provides direct field support on activities specific to Worker Health and Safety. This position reports to the NA HyCO EHS Manager and will have regional support responsibilities for facilities located in Alberta, Canada. The facilities are mainly located in Edmonton and Fort Saskatchewan, AB.

The Health and Safety Specialist is responsible for maintaining contact with field facilities (including office complexes) and serving as the focal point in ensuring compliance by these locations to the corporation’s current health and safety policies and procedures as well as all applicable federal, provincial and territorial regulations. The position will be accountable for assessing, developing, and executing safety improvement strategies for regional clients in concert with corporate goals and objectives.

What you will do:

  • Mentor and support plant leaders on health and safety topics such as high risk, confined space, hot work, and complex safety activities.
  • Development of site improvement plans stemming from Corporate Assurance and Critical Systems Audits or other H&S assessments.
  • Plant start-up support (e.g., initial training, standard implementation.
  • Participate in company safety program coaching and assessments, incident investigation and facilitation, and facility maintenance outages and/or repair projects.
  • Ensure compliance requirements as it pertains to federal, provincial and territorial regulations.
  • Assist in injury management.
  • Lead interpretation of Global H&S Standards.
  • Lead routine review of Incident Tracking Systems (including trend analysis and remedial action validation).
  • Provide support during unannounced regulatory inspections (e.g., Alberta Labour department) and participation in post incident or announced regulatory inspections.
  • Drive consistency across all organizations in the implementation of Global Standards.
  • Provide direct support to teams on identifying and solving worker health and safety challenges.
  • Develop/review and ensure compliance with our global H&S policies including emergency response procedures and training.
  • Development, execution, and evaluation of emergency response drills.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in a safety-related role within a petrochemical manufacturing facility.
  • Bachelor's degree in Bachelor of Occupational Health and Safety (BOHS), Bachelor of Applied Science in Occupational Health and Safety (BASc), or a Master of Occupational Health and Safety (MOHS) or a technical field (equivalent experience may be considered).
  • Experience in hydrogen and/or industrial gas production is beneficial.
  • Expertise in understanding and interpreting Canadian regulatory policies which include the Canada Labour Code and Canada Occupational Health and Safety Regulations (SOR/86-304), the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) requirements, and the Alberta Labour department’s Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act requirements.
  • Proven expertise and commitment in applying corporate safety policies and procedures.
  • Proven experience in site auditing, assessment, and coaching.
  • Emergency response knowledge specific to on-site team coordination, command, and control.
  • Primary skillsets for success include:
    • Ability to influence within a matrixed organization;
    • Ability to deliver classroom training to small and larger groups (up to 50);
    • Ability to communicate complex material in a concise matter;
    • Self-directed and self-motivated; and
    • Good organization and project management skills.
  • Microsoft Office Suite proficiency (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • Training and experience in incident investigation (Cause and Effects Analysis, preferably Sologic).
  • Experience in implementation and training on the use of an electronic Environmental, Safety and Health (EHS) management system.
  • Ability to travel outside of assigned Alberta, Canada sites (approx. 5% travel).
  • Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) preferred.

Travel:

  • Ability to travel within assigned territory in Alberta and to the US
  • Must possess a valid passport or ability to obtain upon hire
