Job Description

Under the direction of the Supervisor, the Health Information Management (HIM) Specialist II will maintain a comprehensive and secure medical record for continuous patient care, research, statistical and billing purposes. Must at all times safeguard and protect the patient’s rights to privacy, ensure HIPAA statues, compliance with Joint Commission, CMS, hospital bylaw and policies and other regulatory agency requirements. Communicating regularly with all parties involved in continuity of patient care, to support operational effectiveness, provide quality improvement analysts, patient safety and quality health information management expertise. This position engages in direct customer service and must perform duties and conduct interpersonal relationships in a manner designed to project a positive image of the department and the Medical Center. Functions as a mentor for the HIM Specialist I staff. Works with HIM Specialist I, III, IV, supervisor, manager, and other members of the department to promote a harmonious work environment.

Minimum Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • One year in Health Information Management or equivalent experience
  • For internal candidates, there can be no disciplinary actions within the previous 6 months from transfer date to the HIM Specialist II position
  • Strong customer service and communication skills (oral, non-verbal, and written)
  • Must be able to multi-task and be detail oriented
  • Ability to comprehend and apply federal/state regulations
  • Possess problem solving and critical thinking skills
  • Ability to speak, read, and write English
  • Data entry skills necessary: competent use of email, fax machines, scanners, copiers, Microsoft Outlook, Word, and PDF application skills

Preferred

  • Knowledge of Cerner/Oracle EMR
  • RHIT/RHIA or AHIMA Micro-credentials
  • Completion of college level Medical Terminology course or equivalent
  • Ability to speak, read, and write in a second language
