ING

Head Technical Team (Director) - Hydrocarbons & New Energies

AME (Amsterdam - Maple) Full time

Introduction
ING Wholesale Banking is strengthening its leadership in the global energy sector. We are recruiting a senior technical leader to head our Hydrocarbons & New Energies (H&NE) Technical Team in Amsterdam. This is a high‑impact role at the centre of ING’s Structured Energy Financing platform, offering the opportunity to shape technical standards, lead complex due‑diligence workstreams, and influence ING’s energy‑transition agenda.

The team
The Energy sector is a key pillar of ING Wholesale Banking, where ING maintains a long-term strategic focus and holds a global leading position in Structured Energy Financing. Within this sector, the Hydrocarbons and New Energies (H&NE) team focuses exclusively on (i) fossil Hydrocarbons financing - such as Reserves Based Lending - and (ii) emerging new energy technologies, reflecting ING’s commitment to supporting the energy transition.

The ING H&NE Technical Team plays a strategic role by assessing technical risks, exploring mitigation strategies and, where possible, integrating them into the lending agreement. The team also prepares internal and external technical memorandums to support the credit decision making and syndication processes, and advises on project bankability. Their deep sector expertise and global experience help build client trust, positioning ING as a value-added partner beyond financial solutions.

As Head of the Technical Team, you will lead a group of specialist engineers and technical advisors who support deal teams worldwide. Your leadership will reinforce ING’s reputation as a trusted partner in complex energy transactions.

Roles and responsibilities

As Head of the H&NE Technical Team, you will:

  • Lead, manage and develop the Technical Team, setting the strategic direction, ensuring delivery quality, and fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration and continuous learning
  • Oversee and sign off on technical deliverables across H&NE financing transactions
  • Drive the technical agenda in both conventional and energy‑transition domains, covering CCUS, hydrogen, biomethane, e‑fuels, SAF/HVO, subsurface energy storage, geothermal, plastic recycling technologies
  • Establish and embed best practices for rigorous evaluation of engineering, subsurface, operational and technology risks
  • Engage directly with clients, technical advisors, lenders, and other stakeholders, representing ING as the Technical Bank in syndicated transactions
  • Review, steer and approve internal and external technical memorandums, ensuring clear articulation of risks, mitigations and bankability considerations
  • Play an active external role, contributing to ING’s leadership across conventional and the energy transition
