Head of US Compliance Risk Management

Mizuho Americas is seeking an Executive Director, Head of U.S. Compliance Risk Management. This role is a senior leadership role responsible for the design, governance, and ongoing effectiveness of Mizuho’s Compliance Risk Management Framework. This role oversees compliance governance, regulatory engagement, enterprise risk assessments, compliance monitoring and data analytics, AI compliance, and strategic compliance initiatives. You will lead a team of compliance professionals and partner closely with senior leadership across Compliance, Legal, Risk, Audit, and business stakeholders to ensure adherence to applicable laws, rules, regulations, and supervisory expectations.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Own and continuously enhance the Compliance Risk Management Program, ensuring alignment with regulatory expectations such as SR 08-8 and industry best practices for key compliance pillars such as compliance governance, compliance risk assessment, compliance monitoring, and AI compliance

  • Work directly with Americas CCO and oversee compliance governance structures, including management-level and Board-level compliance committees

  • Develop committee strategy and materials to ensure effective escalation, decision-making, and regulatory transparency

  • Provide compliance leadership for new product, TPRM, and non-financial risk management, ensuring risks are identified and appropriately mitigated

  • Oversee regulatory examinations, audits, and compliance reviews, including preparation, execution, and remediation

  • Oversee compliance with applicable enterprise regulations such as Regulation W and Regulation O and multi-state licensing regime for Mizuho Bank offices

  • Prioritize and execute compliance-related projects and enterprise change initiatives

  • Manage and develop a multi-level team of compliance professionals while fostering a strong culture of accountability and continuous improvement

Support the Americas Compliance COO in managing:

  • Day-to-day operations of the Americas Compliance Department

  • Ensuring appropriate resourcing, operational effectiveness, and talent development across the compliance function

Qualifications

  • 8+ years of experience in Compliance or Risk Management within a federally regulated financial institution (e.g., FRB, OCC) and/or at a US branch of a foreign banking organization, including 5+ years in people management

  • Demonstrated expertise in Compliance Risk Management, regulatory governance, and regulatory examination

  • Strong understanding of U.S. banking regulations and supervisory expectations

  • Experience overseeing enterprise-wide compliance initiatives and regulatory remediation efforts

  • Experience implementing compliance-related technology solutions such as GRC platforms, automated monitoring systems, case management tools, or transaction monitoring systems

  • Demonstrates curiosity and a proactive mindset toward emerging AI technologies, with a willingness to experiment, learn, and apply new tools to enhance capabilities and drive continuous improvement. Ability to translate AI-driven insights into practical applications that improve efficiency, decision making, and overall business outcomes, while staying informed on evolving trends and best practices

  • Strong leadership judgment and decision-making capabilities

  • Ability to influence across lines of business and control functions

  • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field; or equivalent work experience

The expected base salary ranges from $200.000.00 - $250,000.00. Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including relevant skills, training, experience, education, and, where applicable, certifications and licenses obtained. Market and organizational factors are also considered. In addition to salary and a generous employee benefits package, successful candidates are eligible to receive a discretionary bonus.
