Head of Structured Finance

Overview:

Oversight of the ABS, MBS, document custody, backup servicing and analytics team. This includes responsibility for profitability, risk management, compliance, legal, audit, human resources, administration and relationship management.  Fosters the strategic growth of the entire business line through collaboration with heads of other lines of business, business partners, senior business management, Product Leaders, Strategic Implementation Group (SIG) and/or the sales team to leverage the products and services most likely to succeed.  Analyze the potential for additional products, services, and/or offices within the line of business. 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Maintain profit and loss responsibility for entire line of business, which includes planning, actual, and product development.  Monitor and assess business line profitability, including assessment of trends, opportunities and threats and collaborate on planning and forecasting, including any required adjustments.
  • Lead, manage, coach and mentor multiple product, geographic, administrative and/or relationship leaders.  Ensure entire business line staff is motivated and challenged.  Assess potential efficiencies and leverage among products, services, and offices.
  • Provide external leadership for the business line through coordination with Heads of Sales and Marketing to host client meetings, attend conferences, write articles, speak at public events, and develop strategies.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of multiple products’ strategies, development, tactics and projects in collaboration with other Business Line Leaders, Head of Sales, Head of Product Development, and business partners.
  • Ensure business line key client relationships are fostered and maintained.  Develop and implement strategies, tactics and projects in collaboration other lines of business, Head of Sales, and Bank and Wilmington Trust business partners.
  • Monitor competitive activity in the industry and maintain a firm grasp on market share, market activities and trends in the industry to ensure appropriate action on the Bank’s part.
  • Lead the identification, development and implementation of process improvements to enhance service, processing, profitability and regulatory compliance within assigned business.
  • Ensure assigned line of business is aware of and compliant with all applicable processes, procedures and controls.
  • Work with supporting business partners, including Operations, Risk, Marketing, Legal, Compliance, Training, etc., as appropriate to support the needs of the line of business.
  • Exercise usual authority of an overall business line manager concerning staffing, performance appraisals, promotions, salary recommendations, performance management and terminations.
  • Understand and adhere to the Company’s risk and regulatory standards, policies and controls in accordance with the Company’s Risk Appetite.  Design, implement, maintain and enhance internal controls to mitigate risk on an ongoing basis.  Identify risk-related issues needing escalation to management.
  • Promote an environment that supports belonging and reflects the M&T Bank brand.
  • Maintain M&T internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points together with any issues raised by external regulators as applicable.
  • Complete other related duties as assigned.

Scope of Responsibilities:

This position manages an entire book of business for one of the main business lines in the Institutional business.   This position manages individual development of assigned staff by providing coaching, feedback, and reinforcement.  The position effectively delegates tasks or projects and facilitates and mentors others in their development to encourage a sense of ownership in jobs or projects by providing clear expectations, controlling of sufficient resources, encouraging responsibility and coaching.  The job holder uses appropriate influence to inspire and guide individuals toward goal achievement and establishes and builds rapport by communicating with internal and external clients frequently.  The position fosters attitudes, conditions, and environments that yield improved quality and quantity to maximize performance.  In addition, the position conducts analysis and monitors progress and results and takes appropriate measures and counter measures.   The position also influences non-direct reports through common goal attainment, proper working environment, strong interpersonal skills and development of collaborative relationships across lines of business and across the Bank.

Education and Experience Required:

Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 11 years’ related experience, or in lieu of a degree, a combined minimum of 15 years’ higher education and/or work experience, including a minimum of 11 years’ related experience

Minimum of 4 years’ proven managerial experience

Proven expertise in managing a large book business across different geographies in an effective, risk-controlled and collaborative manner

Education and Experience Preferred:

Master’s degree in Business Administration or related field

Minimum of 20 years’ related experience

Minimum of 10 years’ experience managing a large group and budget

Certified Corporate Trust Specialist (CCTS) designation

High level of proficiency with pertinent and industry specific software

Strong negotiation skills

Experience remediating business lines

M&T Bank is committed to fair, competitive, and market-informed pay for our employees. The pay range for this position is $221,300.00 - $368,900.00 Annual (USD). The successful candidate’s particular combination of knowledge, skills, and experience will inform their specific compensation.
