Head of Environmental, Health, Safety and Sustainability (m/f/x)

At our plants in Halle/Westphalia and Bloomington/Indiana, we produce drugs for the treatment of various cancers and other life-threatening disease.

In the role as a Head of EHSS (m/f/x) you will lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the EHSS programs, fire brigade, and incident response at Simtra’s Halle site. This role ensures compliance with German and EU regulations, supports operational excellence, and fosters a proactive safety and sustainability culture aligned with corporate values and strategic goals. You will be empowered to:

  • Oversee business continuity and physical security at Halle site
  • Collaborate with engineering, production, maintenance, operations, quality, and HR
  • Advise leadership on EHSS compliance and recommend strategic improvements
  • Represent company to EHSS regulatory agencies for emissions, water, incidents, and waste
  • Manage EHSS and Fire Brigade inspections and audits, ensuring timely resolution
  • Provide training and coaching to strengthen safety culture
  • Ensure compliance with German/EU environmental laws (BImSchG, WHG, KrWG), ISO 14001
  • Oversee air emissions, wastewater, hazardous waste, and environmental reporting
  • Lead environmental risk assessments for new processes/products
  • Manage permits, licenses, documentation, and liaise with authorities
  • Develop and maintain occupational health and safety programs
  • Conduct risk assessments, investigations, and root cause analyses
  • Ensure compliance with ISO 45001 and lead emergency preparedness planning
  • Drive sustainability strategy aligned with ESG goals
  • Promote energy efficiency, waste reduction, and resource conservation
  • Support ISO 50001 and 14001 certifications and continuous improvement

What you'll bring:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Health, Engineering, or related field
  • Minimum 10 years of EHSS experience in pharmaceutical or chemical manufacturing, with at least 5 years in management/leadership roles
  • Maintain relevant professional experience and mandatory training requirements to serve as the Company’s Waste Management Officer, Emission Control Officer, Water Protection Officer, Senior Work Safety Officer
  • Strong knowledge of German EHSS regulations and EU directives
  • Experience with ISO 14001, 45001, and 50001, GMP, and sustainability frameworks
  • Excellent communication skills in connection with excellent written and spoken German and English skills
