Head of Artificial Intelligence Risk

We are seeking a senior leader for our newly created Head of Artificial Intelligence Risk role. The successful candidate will be responsible for establishing and overseeing Northern Trust’s enterprise wide AI risk management framework. This role requires strategic acumen, quickly establishing credibility at the highest levels of the organization, and the ability to shape practical, scalable oversight as AI adoption accelerates.

Responsibilities: 

Build & Oversee the Enterprise AI Governance Framework:

  • Develop, implement, and continually enhance AI governance, guardrails, tiering, and review mechanisms.

  • Ensure exception management, accountability structures, and risk based decisioning are consistently applied.

Operate as the independent second line of defence for AI

  • Conduct and oversee independent risk assessments, challenge, and ongoing monitoring of AI systems and use cases.

  • Balance safety, soundness, and agility to enable responsible innovation.

Drive AI Policy, controls & regulatory readiness

  • Shape AI related policy, standards, and control frameworks across the enterprise.

  • Serve as the primary interface with regulators and external stakeholders regarding NT’s AI Risk posture.

 Enterprise Engagement & Senior-Level representation

  • Present AI risk frameworks, assessments, and emerging issues to senior risk committees and the Board.

  • Collaborate closely with Chief Data Office, Data Privacy, Technology, Compliance, Legal, Model Risk, and business functions to ensure alignment and integration.

Leadership & Future Team Build-Out

  • Begin as a senior individual contributor and thought leader, with the capability to scale and lead a dedicated team as organizational needs grow.

Skills and experience:


•    Deep Expertise in AI Risk & Governance, demonstrated through proven ability to design and operationalize AI risk frameworks, controls, and oversight structures.
•    Strong grounding in regulatory expectations, governance standards and emerging AI supervisory trends.
•    Track record of strategic Influence across a complex enterprise. Background in a sophisticated, international financial services environment; GSIB exposure is a plus.
•    Ability to drive cultural adoption of AI in a controlled manner, influencing senior stakeholders across all lines of defense.
•    Experience partnering with AI leadership and functional risk owners (data, privacy, tech, cyber, model risk, compliance, legal).
•    Experience working within an AI forward, innovation focused environment.
•    Demonstrated ability to assess AI initiatives holistically, including data, technology, privacy and model risk considerations.
•    Experience evaluating AI related value propositions within a CRO or risk leadership context.
•    Exceptional communication skills.
•    Proven track record of achieving results within agreed time frames.
