The Accident and Health division proudly provides a diversified array of products to their corporate clients and tailors specialty products for niche markets including AD&D, Critical Illness, Weekly Accident Indemnity, Business Travel Accident and In-Hospital Cash.

About the role

Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer of Canada, the Head of Accident and Health, Canada, is responsible for driving the business strategy to successfully propel AIG A&H lines into a significant and profitable leadership position in Canada sustainable over the long term in support of AIG’s growth and profitability objectives.  The Head of Accident and Health will lead a team of 17 across Canada and be based in Toronto.

How you will create an impact:

Underwriting Excellence & Profitability

Drive market leading performance in the Canadian A&H portfolio

  • Develop and communicate a value proposition that recognizes changing business and competitive environment dynamics, key business drivers and financial elements, and demonstrates the competitive advantage we bring to our clients and key broker partners

  • Develop, position, market, and deliver innovative, market-leading products and services through our geographic framework to a network of producers in a manner that leverages our strengths

  • Drive underwriting portfolio excellence across Accident and Health, in collaboration with the CUO, by establishing and ensuring adherence to risk appetite, line setting, standards and guidelines, and ensure rating and pricing adequacy

  • Ultimate measures of success will be based on GPW growth, AYCR and profitability according to financial plans

Market Leading Distribution Strategies

  • Through strong market presence, develop mutually beneficial relationships with our key broking partners, and position AIG Canada as a leader in the Accident and Health market

  • Deliver multi-channel strategies to deliver the best of AIG products to our customers

Effective internal partnerships

Establish strong relationships with Canada, regional and global leadership; create mutual understanding of overall specialty strategy to drive effective execution of business mode and delivery of AIG Canada strategic plans

  • Work closely with Reinsurance team to ensure an effective reinsurance strategy that supports our risk appetite for per risk and aggregation across all product lines, as well as active management of the portfolio.

  • Collaborate with P&C Underwriting and Distribution to ensure a holistic approach to client and broker strategies

  • Collaborate with Claims team to ensure a reputation of Claims excellence in the marketplace

  • Collaborate with Actuarial on creating and maintaining proper pricing tools and techniques

  • Demonstrate understanding of regulatory and compliance processes and ensure AIG stakeholders understand the Accident and Health business model, underwriting methodology, and the risks we assume, as well as supporting responses to regulatory inquiries

  • Drive deeper understanding across the Canada business of the A&H business model, underwriting methodology, and the risks we assume

Talent development and management

  • Develop tools and strategies, in collaboration with HR, to attract and retain top industry talent and develop high performing teams

  • Lead and develop a team of talented underwriters to develop their full potential.  Drive a culture that promotes AIG’s Purpose and Values as an integral part of our culture

What you’ll need to succeed

  • 15+ years of Accident and Health insurance expertise and leadership in Canada

  • Deep expertise in A&H, expert technical underwriting background

  • Knowledge of market segmentation, portfolio management, acquisition and distribution

  • Proven strategic leadership skills in developing vision and purpose, driving for results and leading effective teams

  • Motivational people leader adept at creating inclusive teams and developing talent

  • Established strong relationships with customers and intermediaries

  • Skilled leader of change; versatile, client focused, results oriented

  • Demonstrated business savvy, analytical and quantitative skills

  • Strong problem solving and conflict resolution

  • Strong influencing and stakeholder management skills, experience of working with senior global leadership teams
