Position Overview:

The Head of Access Services and Technology provides leadership, vision and strategic direction for the Carleton College Library Access Services department.  The primary responsibilities of this position are to lead all aspects of the Access Services department, and to lead the application of technology in departmental and library-wide services and operations. 

Carleton College Library is a member of the Bridge Consortium, a collaboration with the St. Olaf College Libraries.  As a member, the Head of Access Services and Technology works with peers at both libraries on Bridge-related projects.

Compensation:

The expected starting salary range for this position is between $86,300 and $89,100. Actual pay will be adjusted based on job-related factors permitted by law, such as experience and training; licensure and certifications; market factors; departmental budgets; and responsibility.

Essential Job Functions/Responsibilities: 

  • Coordinates and supervises the 2-5 Access Services department staff and provides general management of the department as well as backup for departmental operations
  • Provides visionary leadership of the department, developing efficient procedures and workflows
  • Serves as local administrator of the library management system, configuring options and making informed decisions relating to fulfillment workflows
  • Collaborates with the Bridge Systems and Technology Librarian on policies and procedures for the Bridge integrated library system
  • Assesses current services and identifies improvements by analyzing assessment data and national academic library trends
  • Serves on the Library Leadership Council, and the Alma Management Team
  • Leads library staff in identifying and adapting technology to library needs
  • Promotes use of Gould Library systems by coordinating with library departments that provide research and instructional services, interlibrary loan, access to special collections, and user services
  • Works with Library Administration on computer replacement budget
  • Develops and maintains policies, procedures, and other types of documentation about library systems as needed
  • Serves as liaison to ITS; assists ITS with the support of library staff computers and computer labs
  • Works with vendors to monitor and troubleshoot performance issues with library systems
  • Serves as the web developer and programming coordinator for the Gould Library website
  • Maintains inventory of library hardware and software
  • As part of the College and Gould Library Inclusion, Diversity and Equity (IDE) efforts, assist in maintaining the library’s commitment to equitable access and service
  • Other duties as assigned

Supervision Received and Exercised:

  • Reports to College Librarian
  • Supervises Access Services department staff

Education/Experience/Skills: 

Required: 

  • MLS from an ALA-accredited program, or equivalent education and experience relevant to the position
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of Access Services operations
  • Up to 5 years of demonstrated effective leadership in library management position
  • Demonstrated professional experience providing library management system support
  • Demonstrated proficiency and capabilities with desktop computers and software, Microsoft Office, and library-relevant information technology applications
  • Demonstrated excellent communication skills, with the ability to foster positive working relationships and build partnerships within the department and across the library
  • Effective time, organizational and project management skills, with the ability to work independently and as a member of a collaborative team
  • Demonstrated strong analytical and critical thinking skills

Preferred: 

  • Experience with Alma
  • Experience coordinating with organizational ITS and across departments to troubleshoot and resolve access and other systems-related issues
  • Ex Libris product certifications, such as Ex Libris Alma Administrator or Ex Libris Primo Administrator; OR ability to become Alma certified
  • Experience with Google Workspace
  • Experience with Wordpress, HTML, and other web design software

Must have the ability to understand and follow written and oral work instructions, operations, safety procedures, and hazardous labels.
