Amentum is looking for a Grounds Laborer to join our #pecan team!
Essential Responsibilities:
The Grounds Laborer is responsible for performing a variety of tasks to maintain the appearance, safety, and functionality of grounds and landscaping at the facility. This position requires the use of hand and power tools, as well as landscaping and mowing equipment, to complete daily assignments efficiently and in compliance with organizational standards. The Grounds Laborer works collaboratively with the grounds maintenance team to ensure a clean, safe, and attractive outdoor environment. Primary responsibilities include:
- Landscaping & Grounds Maintenance:
- Perform mowing, edging, trimming, and weeding on facility grounds to maintain a tidy and professional appearance.
- Plant, prune, fertilize, and maintain trees, shrubs, flowers, and other greenery as required.
- Conduct mulching, watering, aerating, and reseeding tasks to promote healthy plant growth and lawn care.
- Use of Equipment & Tools:
- Operate and maintain landscaping and mowing equipment, including lawnmowers, string trimmers, hedge trimmers, blowers, and other related tools.
- Use hand tools such as shovels, rakes, hoes, and pruners for various groundskeeping tasks.
- Ensure tools and equipment are cleaned, properly maintained, and safely stored after each use.
- Debris Cleanup & Waste Disposal:
- Remove debris, trash, and other refuse from grounds, sidewalks, parking lots, and surrounding areas.
- Safely dispose of organic waste materials (e.g., branches, clippings, leaves) in accordance with organizational policies.
- General Maintenance:
- Conduct basic maintenance and repairs to outdoor equipment, irrigation systems, and grounds-related structures (e.g., benches, fences, planters).
- Monitor lawn and plant health, reporting issues such as pest infestations, dead plants, or water system malfunctions.
- Safety Practices:
- Follow all safety procedures when operating power tools and heavy equipment to ensure personal and team safety.
- Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) while working outdoors or handling tools and chemicals.
- Seasonal Duties:
- Perform seasonal tasks such as snow and ice removal, leaf raking, and seasonal planting of flowers or other vegetation.
- Install and/or remove holiday decorations or other temporary outdoor displays as required.
- Coordination & Teamwork:
- Collaborate with fellow team members to complete groundskeeping projects and meet deadlines efficiently.
- Take direction from supervisors and report any issues or needed repairs impacting grounds maintenance.
Work Environment, Physical Demands, and Mental Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to:
- Outdoor environmental conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, and humidity, as well as potential allergens like pollen or dust.
- Moving mechanical parts, power equipment, and potentially hazardous landscaping chemicals.
The position requires:
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, and crouching to complete landscaping and maintenance tasks.
- Ability to climb ladders or access elevated areas for tree trimming or other related duties.
- Lifting, carrying, and moving tools, equipment, and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds regularly.
- Dexterity and strength for handling landscaping tools and performing repetitive motions for extended periods.
- Vision abilities, including the ability to identify colors, depth perception, and the ability to focus on landscaping details.
Noise levels in the work environment may range from moderate to loud due to the use of landscaping and power equipment.
Minimum Requirements (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities):
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- At least 6 months of experience using mowing and landscaping equipment, including lawnmowers and trimmers.
- Extensive knowledge of hand and power tools required for groundskeeping and related maintenance tasks.
- Basic understanding of landscaping practices, lawn care techniques, and plant maintenance principles.
- Familiarity with minor maintenance and troubleshooting of landscaping equipment.
- Ability to follow instructions, work independently, and prioritize daily responsibilities effectively.
Clearance Required (If Applicable):
Minimum Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
Minimum Years of Experience:
- Minimum of 6 months of experience working with mowing and landscaping equipment.
Required Certifications (If Needed):
- None required (Optional: knowledge of state or local licensing for landscaping or herbicide/pesticide application may be beneficial).
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior experience working in commercial or industrial grounds maintenance.
- Familiarity with irrigation system operation and repairs.
- Knowledge of environmentally sustainable landscaping practices.
- Basic mechanical skills for troubleshooting and repairing landscaping equipment.
- Strong teamwork and communication skills for collaborating with groundskeeping teams.
Service Contract Act (SCA) Compensation & Benefits:
This is an hourly, overtime-eligible position that falls under the Service Contract Act (SCA). In accordance with the Health and Welfare provisions of the SCA, and in addition to your base hourly rate, you may be eligible to receive an additional health and welfare payment for each hour you work to ensure compliance with the minimums set forth by the act. The amount you are entitled to receive will vary depending upon the fringe benefits you select now and in the future.
Compensation Details:
$40,000 to $90,000
