Global MSL Excellence Associate Director

Introduction to role:

This role is based in Barcelona, with an on-site commitment of three days a week. Fluency in English is required.

This role puts you at the center of how we translate evidence into meaningful external engagement, shaping strategy and execution that empowers MSLs to deliver the right science to the right experts at the right time.

You will partner across Medical Affairs and adjacent functions to build a cohesive 12–24 month roadmap, orchestrate insight generation and reporting beyond congress moments, and ensure seamless alignment from global strategy to local execution.

Relying on prior Field Medical experience, the Global MSL Excellence Associate Director is responsible for embedding field Medical strategic plans across markets, defining engagement priorities for clinical trial support, analysing and communicating actionable insights to Global and Local stakeholders, and leading the design, implementation and continuous improvement of tumour area-specific tactics that ensure robust adoption of Field Medical ways of working globally.

Accountabilities:

Field Medical strategy:

  • Responsible contributing to development of the tumour area Field Medical strategic plan (FMSP) and 12–24 month roadmap for assigned indications/workstreams - anchored to Global medical strategy, scientific narrative(s), care gaps, evidence milestones, launch and external engagement needs.

  • Support the GMSLE Director in leading the Field Medical Leadership Team (FMLT) and enabling effective localisation and operationalisation of Field Medical strategy and MSL activities in line with tumour area priorities and Local needs.

Tactical planning and execution:

  • Responsible for the day-to-day design, development and delivery of GMSLE tactics; setting and tracking measurable success criteria, budget and timelines.

  • Adapt tactical execution according to evolving priorities, proactively identifying potential challenges/risks and proposing solutions for assigned tactics – seeking guidance from the GMSLE Director when required.

Cross-functional partnering:

  • Ensures close collaboration with key stakeholders – including Global Medical Affairs, Clinical Operations, Medical Excellence, Strategy & Operations (MESO), Local Field Medical and Alliance stakeholders (amongst others) – to ensure Field Medical tactics and activities support tumour area priorities and Local needs.

Clinical trial operations:

  • Support the operationalisation of Field Medical support for AstraZeneca’s clinical development program – developing clear, pre-defined expectations and key insights topics/questions (KITs/KIQs) for prioritised trials, whilst ensuring the strategic alignment of associated Field Medical training and content for external use.

Insights strategy and reporting:

  • Responsible for defining Field Medical key insight topics/questions (KITs/KIQs) for assigned indications, proposing refinements based on emerging needs and insight quality.

  • Responsible for developing and communicating standardised insights reporting and orchestrating inputs into Global-to-Local insight discussion forums to help inform tumour area strategy, evidence plans and launch decisions – including and beyond congress data readouts.

Measurement and impact reporting:

  • Monitor, analyse and report Breast Cancer Field Medical activities and impact, tracking alignment with OBU Global key performance indications (KPIs) and enterprise-wide Field Medical expectations.

Digital uptake:

  • Embed defined tactics that support the consistent utilisation of available Field Medical systems/tools (e.g. CRM) to support in-field effectiveness and external engagement across markets.

Field Medical subject matter expertise:

  • Responsible for ensuring Breast Cancer GMSLE deliverables align to Field Medical needs, and providing clear and compliant insight to cross-functional stakeholders so that MSL-related activities meet global standards and requirements.

Risk and compliance leadership:

  • Ensure GMSLE tactics adhere to global compliance standards for Field Medical, adjusting approaches as required.

Mentorship and Team Development:

  • Contribute innovative thinking and best practice sharing to support continued and consistent high performance of the Global MSL Excellence team.

Vendor and budget management:

  • Responsible for effectively managing vendors and budget across assigned tactics/workstreams, forecasting spend and tracking actuals.

Essential Skills/Experience:

  • Advanced degree in a scientific discipline or health sciences field.

  • 3+ years in an MSL organization.

  • Oncology experience with deep understanding of medical strategy, clinical development, Medical Affairs and Field Medical.

  • Track record leading above country programs that that support the operational excellence and capability development of high performing Field Medical teams‑country programs that that support the operational excellence and capability development of high performing Field Medical teams.

  • Strong strategic thinking, prioritisation, communication and collaboration skills.

  • Ability to manage strategic relationships, and lead and influence in a matrix.

  • Robust project and budget management skills

Desirable Skills/Experience:

  • Experience of working in Global and/or Regional Medical Affairs role.

  • Experience in MSL performance management and outcomes-based reporting.

  • Clear understanding of the compliance requirements and governing bodies for MSL programs.

  • Effective problem solving using creative solutions and project management skills.
