Royal Vopak

Global Environmental Director

Rotterdam Full time

Vopak helps the world flow forward. We store the energy of today and tomorrow. But behind our impressive terminals and tanks, it is our people who make the difference. To strengthen our leading position in the energy transition and global trade, we are looking for your talent. As Global Environmental Director, you will play a key role in realizing our ambitions while building both the future of Vopak and your own.

On sustainability, we are ambitious: we want to facilitate the introduction of the sustainable vital products of the future while reducing our own environmental and carbon footprint. We are seeking a strategic and experienced Global Environmental Director to lead our global environmental risk management and support our sustainability integration.

What will you do as a Global Environmental Director?

As the Global Environmental Director, you will serve as the company’s lead authority on environmental stewardship and risk mitigation. In this critical leadership role, you will take full ownership of Vopak’s global environmental liabilities, with a specialized focus on soil and groundwater remediation and ensuring rigorous environmental due diligence across our international portfolio.

Why you’ll love working with us:

  • A competitive salary (with growth potential) depending on experience, plus an attractive bonus.

  • 30 vacation days.

  • An excellent pension scheme with only a 4% personal contribution to our own Vopak pension fund: https://pensioenfonds.vopak.com/

  • We will continuously invest in your personal growth, and future career path within Vopak.

  • We cover 50% of your health insurance premium.

  • Great atmosphere! Plenty of freedom and room for initiative.

Your mission:

Beyond risk management, you will be a key architect of our sustainability strategy. You will drive the environmental dimensions of our Double Materiality Assessment (DMA), safeguard our assets by managing physical climate impacts, and spearhead our global biodiversity initiatives. Acting as a strategic partner to the Global Sustainability Manager, you will play a decisive role in advancing our decarbonization goals, ensuring that Vopak’s environmental performance aligns with our ambition to lead the energy transition.

The Global Environmental Director reports directly to the Vice President Safety & Sustainability. This position is based within the Global Safety & Sustainability department at the Headoffice.

What will you be doing?

  • Global Strategy & Compliance: Lead the global environmental strategy and governance frameworks, ensuring alignment with emerging international regulations like CSRD and EU Taxonomy.

  • Financial Liability Management: Partner with Finance and Legal to assess and manage global environmental financial liabilities, specifically Asset Retirement Obligations (ARO).

  • Risk Mitigation & Due Diligence: Act as the global technical lead for environmental risk frameworks (EIA, Soil & Groundwater) and due diligence/remediation efforts.

  • Compliance Oversight: Manage global environmental incident investigations and maintain international certifications, such as the ISCC for terminals.

  • Climate & Emission Roadmaps: Direct physical and transitional climate risk assessments and partner on GHG and VOC emission reduction initiatives.

  • Biodiversity & Reporting: Lead the global biodiversity program and manage sustainability data collection, including Double Materiality Assessments (DMA) and performance reporting.

  • Training & Culture: Develop and lead global training programs to strengthen environmental awareness and capability across all business units.

Does this sound like you?

  • You have a strong passion for environmental science combined with a pragmatic and realistic mindset. You can distinguish essential tasks from daily clutter and work independently.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, or related field; Master’s degree preferred.

  • Professional certifications such as ISO 14001 Lead Auditor, Certified Environmental Professional (CEP), or equivalent.

  • Minimum of 10  years of experience in global environmental compliance, risk management, and sustainability leadership.

  • Proven track record in developing and implementing environmental governance frameworks and compliance systems.

  • Experience working with international regulatory bodies and managing global environmental audits.

  • Excellent verbal and writing skills in English. The ability to speak Dutch is nice-to-have but not conditional.
