The Impact You’ll Make in this Role
With a renewed focus on customer-led growth, 3M seeks to recruit a leader to join the Transportation and Electronics Business Group and take over commercial leadership of its growing business with leading commercial vehicle customers. The Director of the Commercial Vehicle Vertical will be responsible for setting strategy, driving customer engagement and revenue growth. The Director will serve as a segment-level commercial leader, responsible for end-to-end strategy, product roadmap, and commercial execution in a complex, highly technical, and global market. Moreover, the Director will be responsible for bringing voice-of-the-customer feedback from the outside into 3M with a view for shaping future investments in R&D to best align with the automotive customer needs.
This role requires a leader who can flex between the operational elements of managing existing customer programs with deeply technical product development, and segment strategy while driving a go to market transformation. The Director will be the critical link connecting global customers with 3M’s engineering, R&D, quality, and supply chain teams.
They will be responsible for setting and delivering on shared goals across these matrixed organizations.
Key responsibilities include:
Developing and executing 3M’s strategy for the commercial vehicle vertical, with accountability for performance, revenue, and margin growth.
Leading a global team consisting of field sales and account managers
Owning direct OEM and tier relationships globally and actively engaging with customers to understand their technical requirements and deliver tailored solutions
Overseeing product commercialization and new product introduction (NPI), ensuring development aligns with leading-edge automotive trends
Championing internal change to elevate 3M’s commercial vehicle business performance, pushing for higher standards in quality, customer responsiveness, and technology leadership.
Representing 3M in external industry forums and associations, sharing segment insights and building the company’s reputation.
Tracking and reporting segment successes, ROI, and continuous improvement initiatives for marketing and executive leadership.
Your Skills and Expertise
The ideal candidate has a proven record of commercial leadership and customer engagement in the commercial vehicle value chain – OEM and tier customers. Candidates must demonstrate experience developing and commercializing complex technical solutions for the commercial vehicle market and have managed customer-facing teams with global scope.
To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M requires (at a minimum) the following qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree or higher in business, science, or engineering (completed and verified prior to start) from an accredited institution
Eight (8) or more years of experience managing go-to-market functions and influencing matrixed teams across technical R&D, manufacturing, supply chain, and quality; able to set shared goals and deliver end-to-end business alignment.
Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:
Deep understanding of the commercial vehicle industry and value chain, including major players and decision-making processes.
Ability to build vision and strategy while developing strong action plans and driving teams to deliver.
Proven ability to represent customer and market differences for strategy, management, and execution.
Proven track record of delivering results and building business with strength, growth, and sustainable margins.
Demonstrated ability to lead, execute, and deliver as part of a broader leadership team, frequently without direct ownership of day-to-day operational resources/execution.
Agile leader, able to adapt approaches in dynamic environments to deliver the right outcomes.
Change leader, able to activate engagement and culture shift.
Ability to lead through influence at high levels in the organization.
Ability to develop C-level relationships, including technical and non-technical leaders, and convey strategic direction and capabilities to support customer needs.
Ability to deal with abstract concepts and changing environments.
Work location:
This position has the possibility for remote work for candidates located in Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan. Employees located within a 50 mile radius from 3M Livonia, MI must work on-site at least 4 days per week.
Travel: May include up to 40% domestic/international
Relocation: May be authorized
