GIS Specialist – MCA Nepal Reforestation
POSITION DETAILS
Winrock is recruiting a GIS Specialist for the Millennium Challenge Account (MCA) Reforestation project in Nepal.
This position is contingent upon award.
The GIS Specialist will be responsible for developing GIS materials, including dashboards, data entry into the GIS, data cleaning, QA of data entered into the GIS, and training programming staff in the use of GIS dashboards. They will develop computerized mapping as a management and communication tool for improving intra- and inter-activity coordination and manage the GIS data collection, storage, and analysis.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSBILITIES
- Obtain existing GIS base maps, and prepare standard templates for the forest areas
- Enter boundary survey data and data provided by the soil scientist, foresters and other team members to develop a series of maps for plantation sites and for the forest site.
- Provide training to the team on updating and using GIS-based mapping for forestry and community engagement activities.
- Produce specialist reports as required by the project manager.
- Utilize GIS software to analyze spatial and non-spatial information to support evidence-based decision making for the activity;
- Ensure the stable operation of the project’s database(s) and dashboards and conduct regular updates and functionality tests, serving as the project’s first line of defense against critical malfunctions;
- Ensure the security of data by implementing regular software, security, and operation systems updates;
- Collaborate with technical and communications staff to visualize important findings for reports and other uses;
- Develop dashboards, input, and clean data.
- Train project staff as needed on dashboards;
- Collaborate with other staff members including technical Specialists, Operations team, IT team, etc.
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS AND BACKGROUND:
Education:
Masters degree in survey, GIS or other relevant discipline
Work Experience:
- 10 years of experience in preparation of GIS based maps and information in Nepal.
- Demonstrated experience in the application of spatial analysis to land use, land use change, or land planning is must.
- Experience in analysis and design of projects using information technology and GIS is required.
- Good understanding of remote sensing methods and techniques a plus.
- Experience with databases using SQL including construction and macro development is desirable.
- Strong skills in data visualization and adaptive learning approaches.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Experience providing quality assurance on data collected by partners.
- Ability to work and train using GIS software.
- Familiarity with a broad range of forestry and environmental issues is required.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills are required, including a demonstrated ability to produce clear and concise reports and presentations on highly technical material (professional presentations, etc.).
- Demonstrated strong analytical capability and excellent interpersonal skills are required, including the ability to interact effectively with others.
- Self-motivated and able to work independently.
- Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
- Language skills: Nepali – fluent, English – Advanced (written and spoken) required.
