Position Summary

A career in GIS will provide the opportunity to map existing utilities for land development, asset management and utility projects. This typically includes generating a variety of GIS products and performing data searches and retrievals. Additionally, this includes assisting in the design, development, testing and implementation of GIS applications to meet customer needs and enterprise requirements; developing and maintaining GIS databases; and keeping track of utility information received from various sources and perform data conversion from field survey and record documents.

Roles within GIS are responsible for compliance, standards, training, reporting for regulatory requirements, operating procedures management, and rules and procedures that the organization as a whole, as well as all employees, must comply with. Records management teams are also responsible for housing all physical measurement copies that outline pipes and infrastructure so field services can locate appropriate infrastructure when needed.

Roles and responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Performing (under some supervision) assigned tasks within ArcGIS Pro that support day-to-day activities and project goals
  • Following appropriate GIS methods and workflow procedures in performing tasks
  • Planning and organizing workload based on company and departmental needs
  • Collaborating with supervisory personnel to develop routine workflows
  • Recommending GIS-based alternatives to traditionally used workflows, examining new methods and techniques, and proactively seeking out senior personnel to discuss potential solutions to problems
  • Participating in group meetings including possibly presenting data or preparing data for others to present

Under direct supervision, this role will assist in the day-to-day creating, editing, and correcting of data within SJI’s GIS system. Using established GIS practices, the successful candidate will also participate in larger projects to assist in keeping our GIS system accurate and reliable. These larger projects will involve use of ArcGIS Pro as well as other work management systems, including Maximo.

In addition to the above, the successful candidate is expected to work closely with other departments to fulfill their GIS needs. These needs include but are not limited to creating maps, researching GIS discrepancies, performing data extracts, and advising on where GIS can best fit into their business processes.

It is expected that this role applies entry level skills to projects or assignments within the GIS group. You will receive general instructions on routine work and receive detailed instructions on new projects or assignments. The successful candidate will contribute to SJI through their own efforts and application of expertise, skills, or tasks. This role reports to the GIS Supervisor.
