This position is for an experienced Software Engineer with either professional or personal project experience in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, or Generative AI.   The position will be part of the Applied Research and Technology (ART) Aerospace Technologies Team designing and developing the next-generation avionics systems of the future.

The ART Aerospace Technologies Development Sandbox team is chartered with defining new disruptive developmental process improvements for the Collins Aerospace business to enable faster cycle times, lower total lifecycle cost, reduce tech debt and enable greater reusability.

This position will be performed on-site in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

What You Will Do:

  • Develop, design and conclude experiments to accelerate business capabilities in Generative AI for safety-critical development

  • Be obsessively passionate, inquisitive, and seek to solve everyday problems in innovative ways

  • Thrive in a collaborative environment and clearly communicate while confidently providing technical guidance, mentoring, and support to multiple sub-projects

Qualifications You Must Have

  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and minimum 8 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 5 years of experience

  • 5+ years of software development experience, including delivery of complex, production-grade systems

  • Advanced proficiency in Unix/Linux environments and Python development

  • Full stack development experience (frontend, backend, APIs) with at least 2+ end-to-end applications delivered

  • Demonstrated experience designing, building, and deploying scalable systems in production

  • Proven ability to present technical concepts clearly to large or cross-functional audiences

  • Working knowledge of AI/ML fundamentals with hands-on application in projects or research

  • Experience developing and deploying Generative AI applications in a production or pilot environment

Qualifications We Prefer

  • Hands-on experience with LLM frameworks (e.g., LangChain, Haystack) in at least one implemented use case

  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced, ambiguous environment

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear, actionable insights for both technical and non-technical stakeholders

  • Proven curiosity and continuous learning mindset, particularly in emerging AI/ML and Generative AI technologies

The salary range for this role is 107,500 USD - 204,500 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
