The Opportunity:

As a Farmer 3 for the Wenatchee Tree Fruit Research and Extension Center you will lead assigned temporary labor and perform a variety of assignments in general farming work, which may include assisting in the care and management of orchards, operating and repairing a variety of light, medium and heavy farming equipment, field and shop work. This position will supervise, instruct, and train temporary farm workers and other part-time laborers. You will communicate with Washington State University (WSU) staff and public in person, by phone and by email on a variety of work related matters. You will also be responsible for reviewing a variety of materials and resources to ensure to ensure proper and successful completion of work by you and your team. Some travel off site may be required.

Percentage Breakdown of Job Functions:

  • 65% Field Work and Orchard Research Support

  • 15% Shop Work/Repairs

  • 15% Lead

Physical Requirements

Work is primarily performed outdoors, with occasional off-site travel. The position involves navigating varied terrain (such as yards, unpaved walkways, and driveways) and accessing different building types (including areas with stairs or narrow corridors). Some job duties include lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling items weighing up to 50 pounds.

Work Conditions:

Most of the work is performed in an outdoor environment but interactions in employee workplaces are periodically necessary. This may be indoors or outside in any weather condition. Intense emotional situations may exist which necessitate incumbent’s ability to lend a calming influence and control.

Additional Information:

This is a full time (100% FTE), permanent position. This position is overtime eligible.
 

Monthly Salary: $3,752 to $5,011 | Range 42 Steps A - M | Successful candidates are typically hired at the beginning of the salary range and receive scheduled salary increment increases in accordance with WAC 357-28.

In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate’s current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position.

Required Qualifications:

  • Three years of experience in farm related work, at least six months must include experience directing the work of others: college or vocational training in agriculture may be substituted for the work experience.

  • Must have, or be able to obtain by time of hire, a valid driver’s license and meet requirements in accordance with SPPM 7.10 and departmental driving standards. 

  • Must have pesticide applicators license or the ability to obtain license within 90 days of hire 

  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Willingness to work irregular hours when necessary

  • Knowledge and ability to operate, repair and maintain farm and other related equipment.

  • Fluent in English and Spanish Language
