Overview
Join the Laser Chip Development team at Lumentum, where you will contribute to groundbreaking projects that shape the future of optical technologies for telecom and data center networks. Our team is focused on designing and developing semiconductor laser chips for cutting edge applications. As a failure analysis intern, you’ll work alongside experienced engineers and gain hands-on experience in analyzing and troubleshooting new designs and processes with respect to reliability.

Responsibilities
As a Failure Analysis Intern, you will:

  • Assist in the design and development of a new experimental lab set-up to investigate fundamental failure modes of high-power semiconductor diode lasers used for telecommunication and AI infrastructure applications
  • Perform systematic experiments, including data analysis, to support design validation with respect to device reliability
  • Shadow failure analysis engineers and technicians in the lab, and at external labs using IV characterization, visual inspection, electroluminescence (EL) imaging, focused ion beam (FIB) milling, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS) etc. to perform root cause analysis.
  • Prepare technical documentation and present findings to the engineering team.

Location
This internship will be on-site in San Jose, California.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s program in Electrical Engineering, Materials Science or a related field.
  • Experience with hands-on laboratory experiments
  • Familiarity with computer programming (LabView or Python or similar).

Desired Qualifications

  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Familiarity with electron microscopy techniques
  • Excellent communication skills and a proactive approach to teamwork.

Pay Range: $23.75 - 54.30/hour USD
