About the opportunity.

Reporting to the Chief Investment Officer (CIO), the Executive Manager, Equities will play a key role in shaping and implementing Commonwealth Private’s research and investment strategy for listed market equities.
 

This role is responsible for researching and managing diversified managed account portfolios across Australian and international equity allocations. It involves undertaking rigorous due diligence on underlying strategies, including emerging markets, small- and mid-caps, diversifying assets, and core large-cap exposures, to ensure robust portfolio construction and alignment with investment objectives.
 

The successful candidate will bring sound judgement and the ability to take measured, appropriately sized positions, including where opportunities may require thoughtful contrarian thinking.
 

The Executive Manager, Equities will be a senior member of the Investment Research Team, working closely with the CIO and broader portfolio construction colleagues to deliver high‑quality equity outcomes for clients. This role also leads a team of two Senior Analysts and one Investment Analyst, providing direction, mentorship, and oversight to support the delivery of research and investment outcomes. 
 

In this role you will:

  • Partner with the CIO to help design and implement equity strategy across listed domestic and global markets
  • Construct and oversee local and global equity sleeves that serve as building blocks within the broader multi‑asset solutions, that can also be used by self-directed investors as stand-alone options
  • Contribute to the ongoing development of best‑practice investment selection and portfolio construction methodologies
  • Generate high‑conviction sector ideas designed to deliver alpha, including selectively adopting contrarian positions where appropriately sized and risk‑aware
  • Prepare high‑quality investment papers and due diligence materials to support investment approval and ongoing governance processes
  • Lead and mentor a small team of analysts, fostering rigorous thinking, healthy challenge and analytical humility
  • Produce portfolio commentary and thought‑leadership materials for clients and internal stakeholders
  • Represent the investment house view both internally and externally through presentations, client forums and industry engagement
  • Work with research providers and strategic alliance partners
  • Actively engage with frontline distribution to deliver training, gather feedback and insights, and incorporate this into investment and portfolio positioning.
  • Collaborate with business enablement and platform teams on investment communications, product development, ensuring alignment between portfolio strategy, platform capability and client outcomes.
     

About you.

To be successful in this role, you will bring a combination of strong technical capability, sound judgement and a thoughtful investment mindset, including:

  • Significant experience managing equity or multi‑asset portfolios, particularly across managed and listed investments
  • A strong appreciation for valuation, and importance of buying assets at reasonable prices
  • A fundamental, cash‑flow focused approach to equity research and portfolio construction
  • Comfort operating in uncertainty, with the ability to think probabilistically and build portfolio robustness across a range of potential outcomes
  • The intellectual humility to challenge views (including your own) and adapt as new information emerges
  • Demonstrated experience leading, mentoring or supervising analysts in a fast‑paced environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex investment ideas clearly
  • A collaborative working style and the ability to engage effectively with stakeholders across the investment and advisory ecosystem
  • Tertiary qualifications in finance or a related discipline; postgraduate qualifications and/or CFA highly regarded
