London Regional Veterinary Emergency & Referral Hospital is a veterinary emergency and referral hospital that delivers expert care and treatment 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  London Regional offers a range of specialty services, including surgery, internal medicine, and neurology.  Our emergency service is staffed 24/7 by a team of experienced emergency veterinarians. Our staff of 65 dedicated doctors, technicians and hospital staff are committed to providing excellent, compassionate care for pets.

The ER Manager is a full-time role, reporting directly to the General Manager.

Position Summary:


The ER Manager is responsible for ensuring the efficient and effective operation of the emergency service while fostering a positive, collaborative, and productive work environment. This leadership role is accountable for the overall management and operational success of the ER, including team supervision, clinical oversight, performance management, staffing, efficiency improvements and adherence to hospital policies and protocols. The ER Manager plays a key role in training, development, and conflict resolution within the department. We are looking for a leader who wants to roll up their sleeves and be on the floor with their team!

Veterinary industry experience is not required, but special consideration will be given to RVTs with a business background/interest.

Responsibilities:

As a key member of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT), the ER Manager is responsible for the following:

  • Oversee the daily operations of the ER team, including Veterinarians (DVMs), Registered Veterinary Technicians (RVTs), Technician Assistants (TAs), and other support staff, in collaboration with the General Manager (GM) and other technical managers

  • Lead and manage the RVTs and Tas, including mentoring and developing associates, promoting a culture of continuous learning and professional growth

  • Oversee scheduling, shift coverage, and ensure appropriate staffing levels

  • Working collaboratively as an active member of London Regional’s Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and contributing ideas and feedback on hospital-wide initiatives and operations

  • Manage workflow and ensure consistent, high-quality patient care and client service

  • Ensure compliance with hospital policies and procedures in coordination with the GM and Lead ER DVMs

  • Conduct performance management activities, including coaching, performance reviews, conflict resolution, and disciplinary actions

  • Establish staffing needs in collaboration with other technical managers

  • Submit requests for additional staff and recruit, hire and train the new staff

  • Support the hiring and onboarding of technical staff, DVMs, and support team members

  • In partnership with other technical managers, recruit and lead the student externship/internship programs to ensure London Regional hires and develops the brightest and best technicians and technician assistants

  • Coordinate and lead various meetings and committees, including department and inter-departmental meetings

  • Perform consistent and regular follow-up on outstanding issues about workload, performance issues/challenges and other organizational concerns

  • Point person for authorization of any overtime and on-call requests

  • In collaboration with the Client Service Manager, manage client concerns and complaints professionally and promptly

  • Ensure adherence to all federal and provincial animal health laws and regulations

  • Provide weekly updates to the General Manager

  • Perform administrative functions as required
