The Environmental Services Coordinator oversees the strategic and operational execution of the company’s environmental stewardship programs across all retail stores and distribution centers. This role is the primary architect for used motor oil collection, regulated waste streams, and corporate recycling initiatives. The Coordinator ensures full compliance with federal and state EPA mandates while driving cost savings through vendor optimization and process improvements.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Program Coordination: Manages the lifecycle of used motor oil, oil filters, oily sorbents, and brake lathe shavings recycling programs, ensuring consistent service schedules and high-performing vendor relationships for 6,000+ locations.
Compliance Support: Acts as the technical lead for stores and DCs to ensure proper used oil management, container integrity, and adherence to "Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure" (SPCC) guidelines.
Financial Oversight: Audits and processes high-volume monthly invoicing from recycling vendors, identifying billing discrepancies and tracking spend against the environmental budget. Submits Cal-Recycle quarterly oil reimbursement to ensure payment for used oil collection in California store locations.
Hazardous Waste Management: Oversees the store Retail Waste Bucket Program and the Distribution Center Waste Consolidation Program (Damaged/Unusable Material Program or DUMP), ensuring compliant classification, labeling, and disposal of hazardous and non-hazardous materials. Creates and distributes monthly DC waste reports to communicate total waste generation from each DC in our network. Ensures timely waste service for stores and DCs to ensure storage limits are not exceeded.
DC Consolidation: Coordinates the logistics of the DUMP program, optimizing the flow of unsalable automotive chemicals and damaged products from the DC floor to final disposal or energy recovery.
Field Communication: Authors and publishes technical bulletins, "How-To" guides, and performance reports to improve store-level compliance and reduce cross-contamination of waste streams.
Federal & State EPA Reporting: Leads the data collection and submission for all mandatory environmental filings, including Annual Waste Reports, Biennial Hazardous Waste Reports, and state-specific recycling certifications.
Tier II & Chemical Inventory: Ensures 100% on-time submission of Tier II (EPCRA) reports by managing accurate chemical inventories for all facilities housing threshold quantities of hazardous substances.
Stormwater & Spill Prevention: Administers the company’s Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPP) and SPCC records, ensuring all required inspections are documented and "audit-ready" for regulatory agencies.
Refrigerant & ODS Oversight: Directs the administrative tracking of automotive refrigerant sales and store-level inventories to ensure 100% adherence to EPA Section 608 and state-level Greenhouse Gas (GHG) reporting requirements.
Database & Systems Integrity: Maintains the centralized environmental compliance database, serving as the company source for all waste manifests, SPCC/SWPPP inspections, and permit renewals for the enterprise.
Environmental Risk Analysis: Analyzes loss data from spills and facility incidents to develop corrective action plans that minimize environmental liability and operational downtime.
Water Quality Stewardship: Manages the service and compliance documentation for DC oil-water separators and stormwater discharge points to ensure consistent alignment with local and federal Clean Water Act standards.
Sustainability Strategy: Identifies opportunities to increase recycling rates and divert materials (E-waste, scrap metal, lead-acid batteries, usable chemical donation program) from landfills to support corporate environmental goals.
Process Optimization: Evaluates alternative vendors and logistics models to reduce environmental service costs and improve the efficiency of waste collection routes.
Waste Stream Oversight: Implements and monitors recycling programs for secondary regulated materials, including E-waste, dry cell battery and brake lathe turnings.
Departmental Support: Provides professional phone support for the Risk Management department and assists with emergency spill response coordination.
Adaptive Compliance: Executes all other duties as assigned to ensure enterprise-wide adherence to evolving environmental regulations.
