The Water Resources Group conducts fisheries studies and water quality assessments, studies and provides consultation on fisheries and water quality matters to Duke Energy and its facilities.
General responsibilities include:
- Provide regulatory compliance support for generating facilities and company operations
- Serve as an environmental subject matter expert in assigned functions
- Maintain current knowledge of environmental laws and regulations and technical aspects of assigned areas of responsibility
- Evaluate and review literature, standards, and guidelines in assigned areas of responsibility to ensure company compliance and determine implications on company programs and facility operations
Responsibilities
- Studies related to NPDES permit and/or Clean Water Act regulatory compliance
- Studies related to FERC hydroelectric project licensing and/or license compliance
- Studies related to NRC licensing activities for existing and new nuclear generation
- Special studies of fisheries, natural resource and/or water quality issues
- Data analysis and report writing
- Participation in industry and professional groups in assigned area of responsibility
Basic/Required Qualifications
Note: This posting is for one open position. Dependent on relevant experience, the level to which a candidate is aligned is outlined below.
EHS Consultant
Bachelor’s degree in Science, Engineering, Health and Safety or other related degree
Minimum 3 years related work experience
In lieu of Bachelors degree and 3 years' experience, a High School/GED and 7 years directly related work experience
Senior EHS Consultant
Bachelor’s degree in Science, Engineering, Health and Safety or other related degree
Minimum 6 years related work experience
In lieu of Bachelors degree and 6 years' experience, a High School/GED and 10 years directly related work experience
Desired Qualifications
- A minimum of 1 year directly-related work experience
- Coursework, knowledge and/or experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Fishery sampling techniques, including netting, electrofishing
- Fresh water and marine fish taxonomy (larval, juvenile and adult)
- Water sampling techniques
- Water chemistry and water quality assessments
- Electric power generation technologies
- Boating and trailering experience
- Familiarity with databases
- Demonstrated ability to effectively work both independently and in a team environment
- Self-motivated and demonstrates strong initiative
- Results oriented
- One or more years' experience in power generation.
- Some experience in negotiating with regulators or stakeholders.
- Experience in supporting environmental compliance at multiple facilities within multiple regulatory jurisdictions.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and successfully complete each of them within specified timeframes.
- Experience in managing personnel from diverse groups working toward a common goal or objective.
Additional Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of environmental regulatory compliance requirements, scientific practices and quality assurance principles.
- Demonstrated effective communications skills (oral and written).
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with management.
- Demonstrated good interpersonal skills
- Demonstrated good analytical and computer skills
- With guidance can develop and implement systems and processes that comply with environmental laws and regulations, permit conditions, corporate policies, goals, and targets.
- Understands project management concepts.
Working Conditions
- Field work on lakes, reservoirs, rivers, ponds, streams and other water bodies (on and off company locations).
- Travel to company locations and frequent overnight travel.
- Frequent work in a field environment with exposure to all types of weather.
- Moderately strenuous physical activity (water sampling, fish sampling, etc)
- Office environment including computer use.
- Occasional overtime, weekend, outage and callout work.
