Team Overview
Our team builds and supports the platform that powers end-to-end device management for Target’s operations across stores, distribution centers, and headquarters. We manage a wide ecosystem of Android-based handhelds, IoT devices, and other edge hardware critical to enterprise workflows. We develop scalable solutions to provision, monitor, secure, and update these devices, enabling reliability, compliance, and operational agility across thousands of endpoints.
Position Overview
We are looking for a Software Engineer with a strong background in Kotlin-based backend systems. This role involves designing and implementing services that interact with large fleets of managed devices such as Android, cameras, or IoT sensors. You’ll be responsible for building resilient, scalable, and AI-first architecture using modern frameworks and tools, with a strong emphasis on testability, automation, and maintainability.
You’ll collaborate closely with product, mobile, infrastructure, and security teams to define, develop, and deliver critical capabilities in our device management platform.
Core Responsibilities
1.Engineering & Development
- Design, develop, and maintain backend services using Kotlin, Java and Micronaut
- Implement device lifecycle management features including provisioning, setting desired configuration, compliance tracking, and remediation.
- Integrate with mobile agents, external APIs, and backend systems via REST
- Build and extend RESTful APIs to support secure device interactions and telemetry flows
- Write clean, modular, testable code following TDD principles
- Integrate with internal and third-party APIs, ensuring reliable, secure, and scalable interactions
- Develop asynchronous, fault-tolerant workflows using Temporal
2.Platform & Systems Ownership
- Contribute to the evolution of Target’s Device Management Platform that supports all device types - Android devices, IoT sensors, network, cameras, etc.
- Own and improve CI/CD pipelines to ensure safe, reliable delivery of backend services
- Monitor, troubleshoot, and enhance platform performance, scalability, and reliability
- Partner with infrastructure teams to support containerized deployments and runtime environments
- Implement observability practices including metrics, structured logging, and distributed tracing
3.Architectural & Technical Leadership
- Contribute to platform architecture decisions with a focus on AI-first principles, scalability, and resilience
- Define and enforce system boundaries, data contracts, and integration strategies
- Advocate for best practices in code quality, system design, and performance tuning
- Drive improvements to system modularity, maintainability, and developer experience
- Conduct technical design reviews, provide mentorship to junior engineers, and guide feature-level architectural choices
4.Collaboration & Cross-Functional Impact
- Partner with mobile, security, product, and infrastructure teams to deliver end-to-end solutions
- Translate product and operational requirements into scalable engineering solutions
- Participate in agile practices such as sprint planning, retorspectives, and effort estimations.
- Communicate effectively across technical and non-technical stakeholders
Required Qualifications
- 4+ years of experience in software engineering, primarily in backend development
- Strong proficiency in Java and Kotlin
- Experience building backend services using frameworks such as Micronaut, Spring Boot, or similar
- Experience designing and implementing RESTful APIs and backend service integrations
- Experience working with distributed systems and microservices-based architectures
- Hands-on experience with CI/CD pipelines and modern development workflows
- Familiarity with AI-enabled system design, including building services that integrate with AI/ML models, leverage telemetry data for intelligent automation, or support AI-driven workflows
- Experience building backend services that consume or operationalize AI/ML outputs, such as anomaly detection, predictive insights, or automated decision workflows.
- Strong understanding of software engineering best practices, including Test Driven Development (TDD), code reviews, and automated testing
- Experience building scalable systems with strong emphasis on reliability, observability, and maintainability
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to collaborate effectively across engineering teams
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with device management platforms or systems that manage physical devices such as Android devices, IoT endpoints, cameras, or edge hardware
- Understanding of device lifecycle management concepts including provisioning, enrollment, configuration management, compliance monitoring, and remote updates
- Familiarity with Temporal or similar workflow orchestration frameworks for managing long-running processes and distributed workflows
- Experience integrating backend services with device agents or edge systems
- Familiarity with event-driven architectures and asynchronous messaging systems
