Why this role matters

The Salvation Army (Salvos) Doorways model of care provides holistic financial support to individuals and families seeking short term financial assistance and ongoing financial management support services. The Doorways Team provide person-centred trauma informed care, facilitate short-term financial assistance, and walk side-by-side with participants as they build the skills and knowledge to break the cycle of poverty. 

About the role

As an Emergency Relief Worker, you will support community members experiencing financial hardship by assessing needs, providing emergency relief assistance, and connecting people with appropriate support services.

Reporting to the Doorways Team Leader, this is a part‑time, 15.2 hours per week, role based in Ballarat, Victoria.

How you will make an impact

  • Conduct emergency relief interviews and assessments in line with the Doorways Model of Care and standards of practice.
  • Determine and deliver appropriate assistance, including referrals and advocacy to internal and external support services.
  • Maintain accurate and timely client records using TSA systems (including SAMIS) and escalate complex or high‑risk matters as required.
  • Identify risks and service gaps, contributing to continuous improvement and safe service delivery.
  • Work collaboratively with Corps, colleagues and partner agencies while upholding TSA policies, values and inclusive practices.

What you will bring

  • Diploma (or Certificate IV, minimum) qualifications in Social Work, Community Services or a related field
  • Experience in emergency relief, intake and assessment, referrals and advocacy within a community services setting.
  • Understanding of trauma‑informed, person‑centred practice and working with people experiencing financial hardship.
  • Strong communication skills, cultural awareness, and the ability to work collaboratively and calmly in complex situations.
  • Ability to maintain accurate client records and use client management systems.
  • A current Working with Children Check.

Conditions

Compensation is in accordance with SCHADS Level 3
