Job Purpose

BorgWarner PowerDrive Systems is currently looking for “dynamic, results driven” individual to join as an Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) Specialist.

The EHS Specialist is responsible for developing, implementing, and executing all safety and environmental programs, including policies and training, at the Kokomo, IN facility while driving a strong culture focused on achieving zero incidents. The position works across all levels of the organization to solve complex safety challenges, applying advanced Health and Safety expertise with originality and minimal supervision. The incumbent may plan and direct indirect personnel and is expected to provide coaching and guidance throughout the organization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develops programs and procedures designed to reduce occupational and non-occupational accident/injury/illness experiences
  • Promotes health and safety awareness throughout the organization through effective employee communications, participation, and programming
  • Coordinates creation of site Environmental, Health and Safety targets and objectives in support of corporate, regional and business group EHS strategic initiatives designed to drive EHS culture, compliance, and results
  • Become SME and promote utilization of corporate wide safety data management tool (EHS Insight) to track hours worked, safety metrics, incident investigations, inspections read across and more
  • Manages development and maintenance of training programs on industrial safety, industrial hygiene, emergency planning, government regulations, hazardous materials, and other related issues then tracks training completion
  • Identifies action-based EHS goals for site leadership team members, functional managers and front-line leaders to support achievement of the site’s EHS targets and objectives
  • Ensures completion of site and workstation-level risk assessments to identify and prioritize Environmental, Health and Safety aspects and hazards
  • Supports the deployment of Health and Safety element champions and teams and facilitates their engagement in ownership of the activities required to maintain compliance and drive continuous improvement
  • Manages the completion of a campus-wide evaluation of compliance with Federal, State, local and company Health and Safety requirements (OSHA, EPA, DOT, NFPA 70E, etc.)
  • Identify applicable OSHA, EPA, federal and state regulations to ensure compliance through standardized processes then prepare and submit government reports as required by all applicable regulations
  • Collaborates with counterparts in Global Safety, Global Environmental, and other BorgWarner business units and locations globally
  • Identifies and supports participation and/or achievement & maintenance of third-party recognition - such as OSHA Voluntary Protection Program, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 - that establish BorgWarner’s Health and Safety program as world-class
  • Leads site efforts to ensure that key Health and Safety operational controls are in place and that Health and Safety action items are resolved on a timely basis
  • Coordinates and investigates workplace incidents
  • Responsible for planning and deployment, budget adherence of all Safety Day and Earth Day activities
  • Performs other duties as requested, directed, or assigned

What We Are Looking For

  • Bachelor Degree in Safety Engineering and Management, Occupational Health and Safety Management or closely related field from an accredited institution
  • Minimum five (5) years’ experience in managing environmental, occupational health or safety programs within a manufacturing or test/technical center environment
  • Professional certification recommended (Certified Safety Professional, Certified Industrial Hygienist, Certified Hazardous Materials Manager, Graduate Safety Professional, Safety Management Specialist)
  • Working Knowledge of cross-functional EHS disciplines
  • Ergonomics experience
  • Management systems knowledge of planning, objectives and targets, preventative and corrective action, and monitoring/inspecting/auditing
  • Must have ability to work with minimal supervision and must be capable of implementing EHS&S Function activities as directed
  • Ability to lead and support cross-functional process improvement teams
  • Ability to act as an agent of change and effective in enabling and driving change
  • Ability to communicate with clarity, impact and passion with all levels of the organization
  • Strong organizational skills with ability to manage and track multiple projects to completion
  • Understanding of manufacturing technologies and processes
